Well, you should sharpen a sword relative to the object you are cutting, but what about historically??? How sharp did people sharpen the swords back when swords were actually used?? And I dont mean katanas, we all know they were pretty dang sharp, I mean a broadsword or longsword or like it

Ewart Oakeshott has described several surviving historic swords as "sharp as a good kitchen knife" I've been around good kitchen knives and they can be WICKED sharp. so I think Katana are not any different in sharpness, basically.

I always keep my kitchen knives in top sharpness, what is the use of a blunt kitchen knife? If it can't slice tomato cleanly without pressure or slice chicken cleanly it is far too blunt.
A sword should be as sharp as you can get it without damaging the structural integrity or the edge integrity, so different blades have different levels of sharpness.

and BloodWraith NAILS it. a sword should be as sharp as you can get it without changing the geometry it is designed to have.
I agree. some swords will therefor be sharper than others.

So I paid extra for sharpening service on my recently aquired DSA Squire, and it can't cut crap. I can rest it on my exposed skin without worrying about cutting myself, I tried cutting a water-filled plastic bottle, and dented it 3 times...no cut.
It's a real rough edge too, when I polish the blade, the edge catches the cloth constantly. My sword now has a sort of fuzzy edge.
I guess I won't have to work as hard to get an actual sharp edge now, I was just hoping to avoid doing it myself for the first time by paying a pro to do it.

Could you post a close up picture of the edge that DSA sent you (as I am thinking of getting one from the near future and don't overly feel like sharpening a DSA again anytime soon.)?
