Gday ladies and gents, my first thread here. I am at the moment designing and ordering a nice semi-custom katana, and am very happy with what I think the results will be. However, looking at a lot of the standard Katanakake available, (especially the gloss black ones), I don't really like them, and a lot of the standard unfinished wood ones I have managed to find have been very unappealing to me also. (especially compared to what the sword will look like.) Being from Australia, I know we have a great many good woods, and would like to take advantage of that with a solid, well made wood stand, to complement the colour scheme of my katana: black saya with black Same wrap, silver fittings and scarlet red tsuka-ito. I was especially looking at an ebony stand, and believe this would be great. So, the questions I wish to ask are these. 1) does anyone know of a good custom woodworker in australia? 2) what woods does everyone recommend? 3) are there any designs you have seen that have really struck you? some of the stands on this page have really struck me as beautiful, mostly the squarish looking ones about 1/3rd down the page. www.samuraisword.com/matt/index.htmany other general advice on katanakake would be much appreciated. thanks!

I went with the Paul Chen/Hanwei Kabuto & Mempo. It looks awsome. That is one solution.

I've just had Brian at Ronin Swords make me 2 kake to hold my tanto's.This is his Tori style and made to order to hold 4 tanto's each. As he makes them in house he can make you what ever you need, check out his website. www.roninswords.com/

Nice one ron, looks very smart mate. I have had a try a making my own with a jig-saw and it always looks shite. Much better made by a tradie.
G'day danielc118, Ebony is not an Oz native so will probably be expensive to obtain. As you know there are loads of Oz native timbers that are at every tone. If you know any chippies, they are a well of knowledge when it comes to wood. Works for me !
