Specifically on a Windlass made sword, is KOA's sharpening good? I'm assuming they put a bevel on the blade, but how noticeable is it? (also, does this affect the way the blade handles?)

I have heard from a few people who selected it that it is a manufacturer's sharpening option, and it occasionally comes with damage to the blade. But that was a while ago. Anyone with more recent experience?

The KoA windlass sharpening option is the same as any other vendor's Windlass sharpening option, as it comes from the manufacturer sharpened if they order it with that option. It's an 'ok' edge. It's razor sharp, but with a steep secondary bevel that Tom K says is more work to fix than to sharpen the sword from the start. There is one exception to this, however; Jason at ArmsofValor personally hand-sharpens any swords that are ordered from him with this option, and produces a MUCH better edge than the standard sharpening job from Windlass. It's still a secondary bevel, but not nearly as steep and much sharper. I'd reccomend ordering any Windlass or DSA swords that you want sharpened through him- and since AoV will beat any prices you find, you'll get the best deal AND the best sharpening job around. ;D The bit of metal removed during sharpening should, theoretically, lighten the sword a bit and move the POB slightly closer to the hilt, but I'm guessing that this change would be so minor as to be unnoticable. I hope this helps! ;D -Slayer

I've gotten a couple Windlass swords from KOA and one from MRL using their sharpening service. It was virtually the same job so I second what was already said about it coming from the manufacturer. All had a very noticeable secondary bevel and all cut very well. I have not intentionally tried to take out the bevel but it appears to me that they are starting to blend into a regular appleseed edge from the touch ups I have done with my beltsander. I find their sharpening service acceptable and will use it again rather than do it myself from scratch.

If you ask Ryan at KOA, he will tell you the Windlass sharps come from the manufacturer and are not sharpened in house.

I bought a Raptor, with the sharp option, and was disappointed in the dull 60 degree secondary bevel edge it came with, but a few minutes on the belt sander and the diamond wheel brought it up to shaving sharp

On a side note, SwordMonger, what do you think of the Raptor? I'm really interested in picking one of those up... Thanks, and sorry for the temporary hi-jack! ;D -Slayer

I'm pretty sure that they do... I can't find any reference to it on the site right now, but I have a distinct remembrance of that. You can always email Jason to find out for sure, though. ;D -Slayer

I have recieved 3 sharpened windlass swords from them. Noticeable secondary bevel, "scary" sharp, and in my opinion, a very good job.

Thanks, Gaff. ;D We were 'actually' talking about AoV, not KoA, but they certainly do have a good price match. I prefer AoV generally, myself, just because Jason is so awesome to his customers, and because he does the sharpening himself making for a less steep and sharper edge even than the scary sharp standard Windlass. -Slayer

I got my Windlass Raptor from KOA sharpened. Very noticable bevel. Uneven. Steeper on one side than the other. But very sharp and cuts very well.
As a side note swordmonger7, I too would be interested in your thoughts on the Raptor, sharpening job aside. I love mine but I always like to hear other, especially different, opinions.

Hmm, how do you blend a bevel?

Hmm, how do you blend a bevel? You use sharpening stones, sandpaper, or a belt sander and you remove metal between the edge and the main body of the sword, where the angle of the bevel is, until you have a smooth surffarce from main blade body to edge.
