Howdy y'all. I'm working on my Ren Faire garb and I'm going Viking. Most Faires require that you peace-tie an edged weapon in it's sheath. Problem is, most of the axes available on the market come bare-blade. What's the best way to carry an axe safely and still comply with their requirements? I don't really want to carry it in a steel ring as that's not the way it was done. maybe I should start a new thread for this, but which axes to recommend the most? Hanwei's Viking Dragon Axe sure is pretty.

That's strange i always thought that historically they were sheathed by a ring loop on your belt, at least that's how I have always done it.
I don't know if it helps but i had a friend who does leather-work make an axe sheath out of scrap leather. its absolutely rustic and barbaric looking and I love it!! You can probably do the same with cloth or something. I am sure as long as you cover the blade it will be "peace-tied"
best way to go is to call the faire office and ask them directly

Hey Daniel! would you mind sharing your source as to the historical innaccuracy of axe ring frogs? I don't doubt that you have good reason to say so, I'm just curious as to where you found that information. As for needing a sheath, well, I *do* owe you a favor. ;D Shoot me a PM if you're interested, but I could make simple leather sheath for an axe, I'm sure. I'd have to figure out the design, but how hard could it be? ;D -Slayer

Indeed. Actually, I've done enough other thing with leather that I'm confident that I could make a simple leather sheath. The 'how hard could it be' statement had to do with figuring out the design. -Slayer

In terms of historically carrying it in a ring or whatever? Everything I've read says the Vikings just stuck the axe through their belt. Everything I've seen, (Caveat: I am a novice at all of this!) doesn't show any kind of special axe frog with a ring on 10th or early 11th Century kits. Further, I present this bit from Hurstwic's Viking Axe primer: One wonders whether men used sheaths on their axes in the Viking age to protect against accidental cuts. There is no archaeological evidence to suggest their use, and the little available literary evidence suggests they were not used. In chapter 144 of Íslendinga saga (which takes place well after the Viking age), it is said that an unnamed man was accidentally wounded by an axe as men mounted their horses to ride to a killing in west Iceland. The episode suggests that the head of the axe was not covered.

Slayer, look at my revue of the hanwei broad faced Axe, and some of the ones that Avery did, you will see a simple sheath and it can have a tie loop instead of the button, and All we do is stick in in our belts, historically accruet...Sanmarc.

First, there are 2 ways to carry an axe H.A. The first is to, as others have said, put the axe in a ring or a sword belt loop. Second is to make a type of frog for your belt. Either way, if its the blade face your worried about being exposed, the hanwei short beard comes with a very nifty blade covering. The biggest reason you don't see alot of frogs is because they're often placed between the body and the belt. Heres a pic of the short beard Hanwei with the blade sheath. It'll most likely solve your problems of a peace tie, as you can attach a leather thong to the sheath and wrap it to your belt. Heres a link to the whole review. /index.cgi?board=otherweaponreviews&action=display&thread=13033
