Hey guys,
wasn't really sure where this one should go, i was watching shanghai knights and really enjoying the fight scene between jackie chan and lord rathbone when i noticed for the first time that rathbone had a basket hilted sabre. I am wondering if there are any surviving examples of such a thing or if this is a work of fancy for the movie? I must say it is certainly an interesting idea and the way the guy uses it makes me think that either he has been training in using it for years or has had some other form of sabre training which translated well to using the basket hilt sabre. Any help appreciated.

There were sabers with fairly complex hilts. It depends on what you mean by baskethilt. I haven't seen the movie (I saw Shanghai Noon with the infamous antler fight, though ;D). I've never seen a saber with a full baskethilt like one would see on a Scottish sword, for example, since saber guards usually only covered the outside portion of the hand (half basket, if you will). If somebody has a vid clip or pic of the sword, I can give a more definite answer. One example: www.liongate-armsandarmour.com/bq1537.htmOne more: www.militaryheritage.com/images/cheval1.jpg

I have seen modern reproductions using a Scottish basket-hilt mated with a cavalry saber blade, like the one Justin posted above. There are a couple of threads on myArmoury about them. In looking through the myArmoury album of baskethilt swords, the Scottish Sinclair swords come to mind. You might take a look at this collection item in page 5 of the Various European curved-bladed swordsalbum to see if it looks similar.

Krieg: ask and you shall receive that's a video clip of the sword fight. It looks like a full basket but i could be wrong, i've never been able to find a picture of the sword itself which is a shame.
Shooter: that isn't it, but that is a beautiful weapon. I never knew scottish weaponry was so rich and exquisite.

I have done a lot of practice with basket hilted simulators in SCA fighting. Initially I thought it might interfere, but I have experienced nothing of the sort. They work well, protecting the hand and allowing full mobility.
I wear mine with half gauntlets to protect the wrist, back of the hand and (very important) the thumb between the knuckle and wrist.

Boy, the action in that clip goes so fast, it's hard to get a good view. I was able to pause it at one point where you can see the fingers of his right hand from underneath, so it is a half-basket saber. I can't really make out much more than that.

Yeah i had the same problem, it was just an exquisite looking sabre and i wondered if it was historically viable. What is a half basket?

I don't know if half-basket is even a real term ( ;D), it's just something I use to describe a complex guard that only covers the outside of the sword hand, like this 1860 Naval Cutlass (scroll down a bit): www.militarysabers.com/navy-nco-cutlass-hi.html. Or, like this (another shot of one of the ones I linked to above). It isn't as obvious from the available views, but the basket portion of the guard only covers the outside of the right hand. It'snot a full-coverage basket. www.militaryheritage.com/images/cheval3.jpg

I am trying to draw my own custom design of a broad sabre with a schiavona hilt guard. Can anyone identify what school the sabre style came from or a manual or something? That doesn't look like something they just made up, that was incredible choreography.

Actually...
I'm sure people know that I'm not really a fantasy type of person, but there is a sword that I really like from the game Soul Calibur 2/3 (both) called the Schweizer. It is a very elegant sabre with a thin crossguard, but it has a red bucksin covered basket hilt! To mke it even more interesting, it's point has been augmented with a poorly defined barb (IOW, it doesn't stick out, it's more raising the blade a bit.) Hopefully, someone has seen this besides me so they can comment on it better than my poor description.

The confusion came from the fact that the link only takes you to the homepage. Copy and paste the link in your address bar and you'll see the pic, Stein. That's the one I thought he was talking about too, but apparently not. Find a pic, Mr. Stein! I want to see the one you're referring to.

I'm really trying to find a pic! Sadly, I don't think that its in any obvious place so I'll have to really try hard to bring one up. If all else fail I guess I could take a picture of it on my tv moniter when I'm playing...But don't exect the usually scenery from my reviews
