Sais?

I know absolutely nothing about sais, but I do know a good friend of mine wants some and figured a great present would be a pair of sweet weapons. ;D
The real question arises when I started shopping around. No sai had a brand name attached, making research on anything remotely functional impossible. SBG didn't seem to have much info either.
So, I rely now on your subjective experiences. Are there any functional sais you'd recommend as a gift? Blunted tip or sharp tip doesn't matter too much to me, though I think they're traditional blunt-tipped.

Just look for blunt tipped carbon steel. The stainless steel brittleness that we talk about in reference to swords doesn't really apply to sai because of differences in construction. However, a pair of Octagon stainless sai I once had did not stand up to the heat-blued carbon sai I also had. (Sorry, no pics this was years ago) Either will work, but my opinion is that a carbon steel pair will be more durable in the long run.
The rule I was taught for sizing sai was this measure your arm from the center of your palm (about where the top of the webbing between your thumb and forefinger is) to the tip of your elbow and then add one inch. This is the proper size for a sai.
As for blunt tips being traditional, I'm not sure. I always had blunted sai, but that's all that was available to me at the time. I had also been told that Sai were originally developed from the wheel pins that Asian ox carts commonly used - as such it would make sense that the ends of them would be rather blunt. However, I'm sure sharpened version have existed.

I was a bit wary about simply looking for keywords, as I'd assume akin to sword purchases, heat treatment could be shoddy or a company may simply be lying. That was my prime intention about asking about any actual brands that could be trusted.
Thanks for the input though; very useful info.

I had gotten mine from Century Martial Arts if that helps. Although that was many years ago.
