I wonder where the old staff/cane/walking stick thread went.... I think we all agreed they're great weapons, and a good training basis. Though I miss my old oak Bo staff.

I couldn't find that one... i wanted to post this there. As you can see, I agree with staff being good weapon. I personally prefer 3' or 4', but the wife likes t 6'. she says it gives her a better reach. I cant wait for her to get enough to teach the spear.

These days 34.5" in a staff is pretty much my thing, as I tend to have one in hand whenever I'm out of the house.

Yes, yes it does although I'm still using the 7/8" mahogany hospital cane I got when I first got injured - I so need to upgrade. However, a Pi "cut" with the little stick I has taken out a 2" branch. There is something to be said for form.

I train in Aikido and we use the Jo heavily. When I started, I was jacked because we were going to do sword (bokken) training. After training with both, I prefer the Jo to a bokken. IMHO, the staff in general is a very underestimated weapon. I can only speak for the techniques I have learned, but I feel the staff is a truly devestating weapon. Nice vid. --wolf

I always wanted to learn the staff those waxwoods look pretty sturdy.Looks like with some practice it could do a decent job defending against a sword.I think it's great you and the wife work out together,I would love my wife to get interested in working out,we have two Starfire hand and a halfs bought for just that but only used them once. I do have a 4 ft staff but it would be cheating to use it,considering it turns into either a spear or two escrima type weapons. looks like a walking staff Turns into a 4 ft spear or 2 escrima type weapons had it for 10 years and it still fits toegether very tight. About how much is a 6 ft waxwood staff and who has a good price on them?

Yeah, when thinking if I wanted to devote my time to training staff or sword, I lean towards the staff. It has a greater variety of moves, is more practical and safer to swing around the house. I still purchased a katana anyway

Well I like the naginata which is an extension of the staff and I just feel more comfortable with a staff, I like the balance and the technique, not to mention it can defeat any other melee based weapon (i.e. not ranged) if you know how, of course I'd rather have a spear or aforementioned naginata.
