if you are goint to store it out of the saya I'd say put it up out of the way on stand. oiled is a must and lightly wrapped in a clean cloth not a bad idea but not super important.
I suspect sewing machine oil should be just fine and when I say heavy coating I don't mean make it drip, I just mean give a couple light coats to make sure you have very even coverage.
storing it in the saya should be fine and may be your best option since it restricts air-flow to the blade.

If you've got an even coat of oil on the blade before you store it, I wouldn't worry and fret about rusting if you store it in the saya. It's the safest place to put the blade from a practical, handling, and moving point of view. And as Tom, said, it restricts airflow to the blade, which will eliminate a whole mess of factors that you don't want messing with your sword. It also keeps inquisitive and curious fingers off of your polished blade, which is really the main source of rust anyway You'll be fine.

Congrats on your first purchase! I can remember how excited i was when the UPS man rang the doorbell with my first sword (a Cheness Tenchi) in hand. For your first sword the Raptor line is an excellent choice too. Perhaps i missed it, but which one of the Raptor models did you pick? I've had an eye on the shobu model for awhile now and hope to eventually get one.

Thanks to all, my doubts about storage have been removed. So glad that my younger brother came out of the "ooh, shiney! grab grab!" phase years ago.

You should also know that a newly oiled blade left out of saya will attract dust particles which can make a mess when you clean a blade. Personally I have always used automotive fish oil and it is perfect but each to his own. Congrats on the new shiny it is a great feeling when you finally get the sword in hand.
