As the title says, I'm looking around for a nice, reliable pocket knife for between $20 and $25. I want something that I can open and close quickly and easily one-handed, but it doesn't need to be assisted opening. It's just going to be used for day-to-day things when I need a larger or sturdier blade (around 3" or 3.5" inches) than what my Swiss army knife has, and it has to be able to hold a decent edge. So far the best looking one I've found online is this, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, or if they knew of anything better? It's not horribly urgent, I just want a decent knife for Christmas and I want to be able to point my family in the right direction. Let me know what you think.

Er, I guess I personally don't have any actual recommendations, so sorry, but I do have something I'd like to say.
I have a small amount knives, a few of them spring assist. 2 of them had the safety lock break, but the first one was a cheap piece of crap, so that was excusable I guess.
The other was this Smith and Wesson one, around $35 I believe (Wouldn't know if their knives are good or not. Like I said, I only own a few knives, so I can't really be a judge on quality. Anyways, back on topic). Didn't think the broken lock would be any problem since I didn't really use it in the first place (and I've no clue as to how it broke, actually, most likely operator error LOL). I wore it probably everyday in the back of my pants. Suddenly the blade would just start popping out once in awhile, I guess because of the spring assist, with it pointing down towards my rear end. First time I didn't even notice until I changed my clothes. And it happened multiple times after that. Thankfully I've not stabbed myself yet, and it probably isn't even likely or possible to do so, but I now have a small rip in my jeans and I don't carry that knife any more. Just not really willing to take that risk of having a nice cut back there. And I like my jeans.
I'm not saying that spring assist knives are bad. Maybe it's just me and my 'operator error'. As far as I know, no one else has had that problem. Then again, I accept the fact that I know nothing. Just hope this was a tiny bit helpful. Er... Have fun- Buying knives that is. ;D

I've carried a Schrade Switch-It for several years, has done everything I need it to and never broke. I'm on my second one actually, the first one I accidently poked into a hot spot on a machine I was working on and the electric charge took a tiny chunk outta the tip. I reworked it and gave it to my nephew, then bought me another. Man, I just got to thinking that was over ten years ago and I still got the same knife. I just recently ordered me a Buck Parallex to replace a Gerber I lost. It should be here monday.

Gerber Obsidian are ok for the money. They sell for $29 at Wal-Mart, but I got mine at Target for $21 on sale.

I have a Kobalt (Lowe's store brand) half-serrated that has been serving me pretty well. I keep having to tighten the hinge pins (usually my sign to get a new knife) but it been working pretty well considering mine came used. New I think they run in the $20-30 range.

Not to hijack or anything but does anyone have an opinion on Winchester knives?

The wins are made in china and are so,so, I've had a couple, but I highly recommend the made in USA Kershaws, got to look as some are made in china as well, I have the 1720ST Galyeen Design KALL? Army Air Core in semi serrated, you can get the straight edge, it was $35 at SportCo in WA state, and that was for special order, same price as ones in stock, Kershaw has some for cheaper with the metal handles, I wont use the plastic handled ones again, they do not hold up to hard work, and I can get about six months out of one off my folders, using it every day to cut scrape dig pry...you get the pic...SanMarc.

Winchester knives are fine for my wife's purse (ie won't get used much) but I'll generally use one to the breaking point within about 3 months. I need to get a new spyderco or scrape up the $$$ for a CS voyager series, just so I have something that will last awhile.

Thanks for all of the replies, this gives me a much better idea about waht I'm looking for. I don't really use my knives often, and I certainly don't do much that would put a lot of strain on the blade, so when I say I want something sturdy I just want something that won't loosen up too much from normal use.
Odingaard, can I ask how you broke that Hibben knife of yours?
And Ric, taht Schrade knife is almost exactly what I had in mind. I just need to see if I can find someplace online selling the non-serrated version of it, haven't had any luck with that yet.
The only local knife shop I know of in my area is really doing poorly lately, last time I was there they had less than a dozen models to choose from, I don't know if they're just selling out super fast, but it seems more like they've stopped ordering in new stock. I'll have to check the military surplus places in town, I keep forgeting about those.

The Boker is not the German Boker...it is one of the magnum series. They have a good overall aspect except I have had a few problems with their screws coming out. The S&W knives are using a chinese 440 stainless like the other two...keeps a good edge for about 4-6 months depending on use. As far as the Gerber goes it has a spring assist feature(which you need to check the legality of carrying it where you live) IMO I would go with the Smith & Wesson out of the three.

+1 for the help Richard, I was leaning towards the S&W but wasn't sure, that cemented it for me. Thanks again everyone, I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about which knife companies are good or not, so I really needed the input.

Cold Steel Pocket Bushman, all the way. I seriously doubt that there is a better knife for under $30 available. You can find them for about $22, if you take the time to look around. Hope this helps! ;D -Slayer
