The violin is my favorite musical instrument, and as it has many sword-like elements to it, I'd figure that I would design a sword inspired by a violin. Here's just a quick draft. The waisted ricasso and the pommel evoke the general shape of the violin body, whereas the rivets, separator, and risers are designed to look like the strings and the bridge on the body. The blade itself has three thin, blackened fullers, to emulate the neck and the strings of a violin. The F-hole (symmetrical S-shaped holes on a violin's body) is a natural candidate for a guard, though it will probably be more like the very similar integral symbol from calculus which is a bit more functional as a guard, being straighter. One way to think of an integral is a mathematical way to cut something into an infinite number of pieces, which is a grand ideal for a sword The scabbard will have the scrolled violin head on its end. I'm planning on modeling this in 3D, as I'm much more comfortable designing in such.

Cool! I think the ricasso is a BIT too thin for my tastes, but other than that it sounds awesome! I'm sure you'll work out more of the logistic details in the next draft and make it flow the way you want it to.
I really like this idea! Good work, +1.

Maybe make the crossguard more in the shape of bowtie pegs?

Violin lover over here!!! Playing in the orchestra is my LIFE!! Hold on, I forgot my swords, they rank second to music...
Seriously, very nice design, but it should have 4 fullers, not 3.

You've done a very good job translating the look of violin into a sword. It captures the style but still looks like a functional and attractive sword. In fact, it looks like something I'd be happy to own! +1

Violin lover over here!!! Playing in the orchestra is my LIFE!! Hold on, I forgot my swords, they rank second to music... Seriously, very nice design, but it should have 4 fullers, not 3. The darkened fullers are the spaces between the strings on the violin; the edges and two polished surfaces of metal between the fullers are the strings. Matches the look of brighter strings against darker wood, and makes it so the strings are the functional parts of the blade. Cool! I think the ricasso is a BIT too thin for my tastes, but other than that it sounds awesome! I'm sure you'll work out more of the logistic details in the next draft and make it flow the way you want it to. I really like this idea! Good work, +1. Yeah, I think so too. The narrowest part should equal the width of the handle at the top for it to flow well. I'll probably make the blade a tad bigger. hmmm....interesting concept. Do you play the violin? I don't play any instruments.

Here's a 3D draft. No textures, and the pommel was called in. Worked out proportions (38 inch blade, 2 1/4 inch wide at widest point, 9 inch handle) and shape details. I'm really unhappy with how the fullers meet the ricasso, and will redo the blade with less deep aesthetic fullers, with the two outer ones ending just above the ricasso. The good thing about having this 3D draft it is that volumes can be figured really easily. From that, weight can be determined (and POB, but its slightly more difficult.) Right now, this sword weights about 5 lbs! Kind of a clunker. I need to trim off some serious weight, starting with the guard, which is an inch at its thickest! The pommel also needs to be tapered. This will shave off about a pound, and changing the distal taper from linear as it is now to concave will shave off some more weight. I'll probably make the edge taper more to a point as well.

To give a more "violin" feeling how about replacing the actual pommel with one that has the shape of a violin head?

Nice looking sword but I think the ricasso is a bit then too.
When I read the title of the thread I had a mental image of a violin with a blade inside like a sword cane. ;D Imagine grab the scroll on top and it could detach and pull a blade from the neck of the instrument.
