Hello
I've been away from swords for a bit, but it looks like I will be starting sword handling again in January.
I've been meaning to buy a sword for a while, but I've waffled for a number of reason. However, it seems that during my absence, a number of things have "gelled" so to speak, and that waiting was probably a good idea! So I've been reading the forum etc and have concocted a "plan". But I am sure you folks are more in tune with what's going on that I am, so I'm looking for feedback. So:
1: I want an arming sword first (sharp) soonish, and a bastard or long sword in the future (say, 6 month to a year).
2: I already own a blunt, the hanwei hand and a half practical.
3: I would like to own both a tinker/hanwei sword and a VA-practical sword (although I could get a signature line probably).
4: I'm plan to get the tinker/hanwei EMSHS as my arming sword, and then later on go to VA for the bastard/longsword. This is the part where I'm most looking for input - should I be doing things in reverse? Get a VA arming sword and a tinker/hanwei longsword/bastard?
cheers,
Ancalagon

Your plan sounds good to me. I have heard more good things about the EMSHS than any other Hanwei/Tinker sword. Not that the others aren't good. Just that there are a lot of positive comments on the EMSHS. And in your 6 month timeframe I think you will like the VA selection in longswords very much. I am looking forward to seeing the Malatesta by then.

I really hope that I'm not hijacking my own thread (ha), but Is the Malatesta canceled? The image on the VA website isn't working, and a quick forum search revealed a thread where they said it had been canceled...

No, the Passau was canceled. The Malatesta is highly anticipated.

I have the EMSHS Its pretty good I dont like it as much as my other medievals but I think that has more to do with blade type than the sword itself It handles quite nicely and comes fairly sharp though it could benifit from more sharpening and the scabbard is actually surprisingly good and fits decently not sure what the core is made of :S some sort of synthetic material I love the finish on the blade it is a very nice even satiny finish (some people prefer mirror but I dont) good sword overall

I think you've got a good plan already outlined, stick with it. You can't go wrong either way...VA and H/T are both putting out quality swords.

I placed the order a few days ago, and I should be able to get it (in theory) in a week.

I am getting it from my teacher who also is a hanwei dealer. The fact that I'm not paying any shipping makes him rather competitive... and if God forbids, something is wrong with the sword, it's not hard to go bring it to him! For the VA, I'll probably order from wiwingti

They sell their Hanwei swords for a higher price than I am accustomed to seeing.
