As some of you may know, I am currently trying my hand at fashioning my own suit of Japanese style armor. I've never done anything like this before and am learning quite a bit as I go. I've made the Kabuto and of course need a Menpo or face piece to go with it. I went with a non-traditional design for the first one and the traditional grimacing face for the second. Please let me know what you think. The first one: And the second: Which one do you like best? Thanks for looking. Troy / Shoboshi

Those are AMAZING! I love both. The first one is very imaginative and it works very well with the overall lines of the helmet. The second one just looks so BAMF though....

Bryn-- Thank you brother. I can't decide which one I like more. Either one will do but I can breath better in the second. First one fogs up my glasses sometimes when I breath too hard but I do like it being different from the norm.

The second is cooler, makes you look kind of like an Oni. You need some horns to fill it out, though. But can you wear your glasses when wearing that one? And if not, can you fight without them?

looking good. i think the first one looks really good. i cant see why it isnt traditional....thers nothing too modern about it. the second one looks ok as well. i think some sort of brim around the head would make it way cooler.

I guess if you can breath better in the more traditional one, then go with that one. I think the facial hair and leaf pattern really compliment each other quite well. But keep the first one around for when you want to be a modern samurai...

Taran-- Thanks for the observations. Yes, I can see well enough to fight if I had to without my glasses, just need them for distance mostly. But they fit with either face piece. This is more of a display piece and to see what kind of job I could do. Though I think it would be plenty adequate to protect me from bites during WWZ!
Ltiger-- The first one is non traditional in that its not the typical angry face they tended to favor for Menpo. I wouldn't really say its modern. Looks more euro to me than anything. Thanks for the input.
Bryn-- Thanks again.

Wow, you have some serious leather working talent. I am impressed. I like the first one better. But then Ive never been a fan of Japanese armor so.... And Bryn....you are the only other person I know of that uses the term BAMF.... ...I made a Bazooka for shooting fireworks years ago that I named BAMF

Thanks Jak. I think my skill is middle of the road. Seen worse, definitely seen better, but thanks just the same. I'm pleased with the way things are turning out. Especially the breastplate. Should be done with that very soon.
Funny. I've always liked movies about knights and kings. Guess I'm a bit backasswards cuz the armor and blades don't evoke anything from me. I don't get that much out of japanese movies, but I dig their armor and swords. Go figure.

Did you hand tool those leaves or is that a stamping tool?

You need to do some acorns to go with the Oak leaves. LOL Can you punch some more breathing holes in your first one without ruining it?
Looking forward to seeing the complete outfit, K

Bloodwraith-- Thank you very much sir. I've had a few inquiries about selling some of this. At this point, the only thing I really feel not so comfortable with is the Kabuto. I need to make another one and incorporate the things I learned from the first one and see how it turns out. Wiwingti can be persuasive and has pretty much talked me into doing one for him in the future. I would be interested to hear your ideas.
Eversberg-- The leaves are hand tooled my friend. A big part of what makes it look good IMHO, but also very time consuming. Then I have to carefully paint the dye around it. Worth it though.
Greypilgrim-- Acorns. Yes, thought about that but elected not to. Just wanted the leaves for this one, but it wouldn't have hurt. Thought about putting some on the Do but again, decided not to for some reason. Could punch some more holes in the first mask but I don't know how much it would help. I get plenty of air, it just doesn't go out the holes easily enough, probably because the holes are in a vertical surface and positioned over my nose instead of mouth. Might try some over the mouth area and see.
Thanks for all the input guys. I'm going to get back to work right now and hopefully will be able to post the Do tonight.

Agreed. I am tapping my finger on my desk and pressing f5 every 5 seconds. ;D (Only kidding, but I cannot wait to see it finished).

That's coming along nicely. I like the second mempo; the first looks more European to me.

Seth-- Yeah. I know what you mean. I feel like that every time Ichiban turns out something new. I admire and then can't wait to see what he comes up with next. Feel the same about this project. Would be nice to simply snap my fingers and have it done, but it involves a bit more work than that, most of it having to be well thought out in advance.
Stag--Thanks friend. I'm pretty jazzed about it.
Midori-- Thank you. I agree with you on both the Menpo. First does look somewhat euro to me too. It was inspired by the 'demon' haunting Bruce Lee in 'The Dragon: Bruce Lee story". Pretty close to what I had envisioned so I'm happy with it.
