Are there any tutorials available for crafting one? I probably wont be crafting one out of steel, unless it is possible to do such with sheet metal seperate from the guard.
Or barring that, does anyone know if there is a standard pattern to them or were they a matter of personal taste? Materials traditionally used and such?
How would one get the leather to take a set to form the shoulders of a rain guard? Wet forming, or would one want it to be made of hardened leather? They traditionally sealed the mouth of the scabbard correct?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hey Chuck, If you haven't seen it already, check out this thread by Roland Warzecha over at SFI. It's not a tutorial but there are some good pictures and explanations of what a "rain guard" might have really been for. I couldn't say myself whether or not they are for rain protection but I just made one for one of my hdpe wasters and it works wonderfully in the way Roland describes. www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98150

That's totally awesome! Never though about rainguards before but it makes sense. Maybe I'll add one to my H/T custom LS. Just for fun, I hope I never need a hand protection on a sharp sword.
BB, your cross leather looks a bit thin to me... I'm not sure if it keeps a blade from hitting your thumb... I guess you'll find out.

While it wasn't a tutorial, the Hammaborg video showed exactly what I wanted to see as far as how the guard was made. Roland apparently uses a stout piece of leather. I was thinking thinner myself, but will try to work with several thicknesses and see what seems to suit me. I was aware that there was a bit of a stir over what purpose the flap really serves, but didn't know what else to call it when I first posted. I had actually seen and read that thread on Myarmoury before, but for some strange reason I had never seen the link to the Hammaborg video. I gots to pay more attention to detail Thanks for the reply
