So Steffen, Did you make a purchase yet? I've been checking back to this post wondering which sword you chose to suit your needs, and if you've taken it out and about yet. no, i will order it on the 20th this month(payday). as to which type, i have wandered far from my original plan. i think i'll go for a Windlass Coustille. i can think of numerous occations and places where i wouldn't wear a full-size one hander, but i would carry a coustille. but nothing is 100% sure until i have ordered it. Ancalagon: a viking sword would be great and very historical correct. my family has some property close to a beach on the peninsula where my anchestors come from. my point is, there is some viking graves there. and it would feel so right to wear a viking sword, when we go there, lighting a fire, barbecuing, drinking and maybe some fishing in the summernights when the sun never sets.

Wow, you weren't kidding about size. I've read some things on the Coustille, and it looks rather stout, but it wouldn't do much for you if you were attacked by dragons while you were out.
... I'm just sayin...
... dragons

even a 50" blade wouldn't help me if i were attacked by the midgard serpent while i were fishing...
so you can't always prepare for the worst

I'm glad I could inspire you On a more practical purpose... I think this is going to be an instance where you want to give as much thought to the scabbard (to protect the sword) and the belt/baldric/etc (so it doesn't get in the way). I think a viking sword would be a practical choice (but so would a coustille), but either way, there are other things you have to think about so it doesn't hinder your hiking or damage the sword.
