Glue?

So I've done several grips in the past but I have yet to do a proper Albion style thread wrapped grip. I am fixing to do one on my newest project but I'm not sure what glue to use. I've heard of using wood glue but I don't trust the stuff. I've had bad experiences regarding wood glue and it's habit of expediting rust.
I'm trying to do a really spiffy job. I've done an under layer of hemp thread. I've got some 1.5 ounce veg tan leather. I just need to decide on what type of glue to use.
So what type have others used?

You haven't had any issues with rust because of the glue? I used wood glue on a scabbard and it made the scabbard useless because it would stain the blade. I now use epoxy on scabbards but I didn't think that would work well for a grip. Perhaps I'll try Titebond then.

Titebond glues do indeed cause rust problems.
Elmer's wood glue does not, and is just as strong.
For applying leather to wood or other surfaces, I use Tandy's leather cement. I believe it's a protein-based hide-glue. It holds the leather to the surface well, but doesn't dry all crispy. It retains a level of flexability, which is good when used for grip-wraps.

I now use epoxy on scabbards but I didn't think that would work well for a grip. Perhaps I'll try Titebond then. In my 30 years or so of using an aliphatic resin glue (elmers, titebond) I have never had a rust and/or stain issue. I am not a chemist but there is nothing in these glues (after they dry) that would cause an interaction with metal. You can check out the MSDS sheets and see that this stuff is pretty safe. (keep in mind that these are water based glues, so they could create rust before drying, but again I have never had this happen) I have gotten these types of glue all over metal ( I can be messy :>), and nothing has ever stained the metal. I use this glue on pretty much everything I have ever created including scabbards and grips, and bows. I do know there are some types of wood that will stain metal. Another type of wood glue (PVA) could, and I have heard does, create rust. Their MSDS looks scary :>) (Gorilla Glue is one brand) There are many types of wood glues, what type and brand did you specifically use? What type of wood do you use for your scabbards? -gaffer

I keep my swords in the scabbards I made using Elmer's wood glue, and I haven't ahve any rust or discoloration problems at all.

I think I used Titebond on that one scabbard. Since then I've used epoxy on just about everything but I don't think it will work for this. I will likely go with either Elmer's or Tandy leather cement. Both sound like good options. Yeoldgaffer, your probably right, and titebond would be fine but I've spent way to much time on this project to risk anything now. I'd estimate at least 50 hours probably a lot more. I might go with the Tandy stuff since it sounds closer to a historical hide glue.
EDIT: The only one of these glues I happen to have on hand is titebond. I've done most of the shaping to the leather so it conforms to the grip rather nicely. Now that I've done that, I don't think the glue is actually going to need to touch the guard or pommel. So after all the debate in my head and on here I don't think it's going to matter much.

Well, you could use epoxy for the main bit of it and use super glue for the edges and/or the end of the thread if you are going to sew the leather together. I dont think either will stain or cause rust problems

I did use epoxy on my last grip which was sewn down the seem. Here's the thread on that one ( /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordcustom&thread=10976&page=1 ) .
This time I was going for the style Albion uses which features a skived edge glued down. If done properly the seem is barely even visible. I finished it yesterday and I think it came out rather well. I will make a thread for the sword as soon as I have time.
