Hello!
I was a little unsure about where to start this thread, admins please forgive if it's been misplaced.
I'm a total newbie in this world, but a GREAT military history enthusiast. I must say that this site is simply awesome, and helped me understand a lot more about sword specs and manufacturing.
So, now to the point: I am interested in acquiring a mainz gladius, and a great chance arose: my mother is going to India for a congress, so I was pretending to buy an unsharpened gladius from Deepeeka and have it delivered at her hotel. That way, I wouldn't pay shipment (intl. to Rio - Brazil, where I live) nor taxes.
The problem is that these guys are quite difficult to talk to... they won't answer my emails, and the people who answer phone calls there just can't speak any english. I find this quite embarassing, for such highly-praised indian company...anyway.
Has anybopdy here ever bought directly from Deepeeka? What should I do?

Don't buy from deepeeka that is what you should do. It doesn't matter the price of the piece it will not be worth it and it will not stand upto even the lightest of cutting, in fact deepeeka are one of the worst companies for rat tails and helicopter potential. Save a bit more and get something better.

He may not want to cut with it at all, in which case, Deepeekas a perfectly acceptable model. Actually I sharpened and cut with a Deepeeka recently and while it's not the greatest cutter it can be done. Yeah the tang is a bit lacking in girth but it's not a true rat tail in the definition I've come to know (rat tail- skinny welded rod welded at the shoulders of the blade). The ones I have are definitely not that. As to the save up and buy something better advice, isn't that kind of answer what put a lot of us off other sites? Jzgpedro, to answer your question, I don't know. I don't know anyone who has contacted Deepeekas directly. In fact I don't think one can buy individual pieces from them direct. I believe you have to go through one of their dealers. See if you can find out if one of those is based in India, you might have better luck.

I can only know this from what I've HEARD but not experienced, but it would seem that Deepeeka is almost impossible to buy from unless you're buying wholesale. Moreover, the quality is already sketchy. I'd have to recommend, even though it will cost you a little more, KultofAthena. They have good Quality Control, decent shipping, and low prices. I know it will be a little more expensive, but this is honestly the best choice for a Deepeeka.

Isn't Windlass also based in India? Perhaps they would be worth looking into as well.

Windlass is in india, I think they got alot more qc and production value going on. Deepeeka ....... suck ....... I have a deepeeka saxon sword and it sucks, glue is holding most of it together. I say get better and by that at least get a windlass ....... or if its just for show or costume piece save money and get a wallhanger one from kultofathena.

Thanks for the quick replies! It's good to know all this... I wasn't aware that they worked more towards wholesale etc. Also, I was interested in deepeeka cuz of a few fairly good reviews about their gladius, and didn't know Windlass was in India as well. Well, this sword will stay a lot more time hanging on the wall than cutting anything. I do intend to do some cutting, of course... nothing too severe nor often, since I live in a small apartment, lol. Anyway, as you have mentioned here in SBG, with great sensibility, you just won't resist and will end up doing some cutting, you need a sword with a minimum of quality. I was really looking forward to seize this opportunity to get a good sword without having to endure intl. shipping and it's costs ( dunno exactly how these swords are taxed, but I believe I would pay the standard ~70% of the product price). There is a swordsmith here in Brazil that produces gladii too, but it's something like 300 dollars, and I've never heard of anyone who's bought from him. www.craigs-medievalsword.com/espadas.htmI'm gonna try calling Windlass tomorrow; as a matter of fact, I found their gladii WAY better-looking than Deepeeka's ! Cooler pommel and handguard, colors, part's size..

I'd go with Windlass over Deepeeka; both are based in India. You could try looking for an authorized reseller of Windlass products over in India if you can't get ahold of them yourself. Good luck in your search.

You are better off just purchasing from a distributor or wholesaler here - there are quite a few of them lurking on the boards that can land you a wholesale price...

Well, he's in Rio, Brazil- he was looking to get it direct from India because his mom's going over there for a conference and wanted to avoid paying the customs fees and international shipping. Not a bad idea, if she can, in fact, get a sword while over there.

Surely they would have some sort of storefront or retail outlet one could visit while in India. That is assuming that Indian law doesn't frown on sword ownership.

Never a good idea to make such assumptions...my thinking is that Windlass imports most of its goods out of country; I could be wrong, though.

I wouldn't bet on the storefront thing either. This is from Deepeekas website; Please see we are strictly a manufacturing- wholesale company, and do not retail. Inquiries for individual pieces should be sent to our dealers and wholesalers worldwide.I think it's the same type deal with Windlass tho I could find no like statement on their site with a cursory look. New handle, eh, Ebon?
