I didn't get to watch, but would have liked to, All I can say about the sword is it is "Functional" (Ugly) I would think you will have to make one your self, or have one made, don't know if a official one will be made...SanMarc.

I doubt an official one would be made but who knows? I loved the movie...a great mix of sci-fi and Viking 'history', and so as not to ruin it for those who have not seen it, I will say no more. I thought the movie sword was ugly, but I think it was meant to be- built as a utilitarian piece for war.
See the movie.

...It looks like Conan's Atlantean sword after being assimilated by the Borg. All I can think of is that the grip looks terrible, the guard probably makes up half of its weight, and it has no pommel for counter balance. It must be a nightmare to actually try to wield that thing.

Looks interesting, but personally I'm not in favor of it. The blade looks cool, but the handle and crossguard are too ugly.

I think it would look good in a stem-punk setting, but I do tend to prefer more historically styled swords in general.

Yeah, the movie was fun, but the sword looks ridiculously heavy. However, it does have some style, like a post apocalyptic weapon or something along those lines ( I've been playing too much Fallout I guess...)

Pretty fugly. I didn't see the movie. It was forged out of a part from the guy's crashed ship or something? Maybe the metal was supposed to be ultra light so the weight and lack of a pommel wasn't bad? I imagine that the cross-guard and grip had to do with it being already part of the metal he chose for being a bit sword-like in shape so that they wouldn't have to do too much work to it to get a more-or-less functional weapon out of it. It "could" be made. Steel blade, aluminum cross, grip weighted inside at the far end in place of a pommel. Wouldn't likely be sub $300 though, unless you made it yourself.

I agree with Banzai. It is pretty ugly.

Because we all do not share the same taste; someone is going to like that, if only because it is a replica of the one used in the movie.
Think about when you first fell in love with swords; things like blade or edge geometry, distal and profile taper meant nothing to you. I'm sure this rings true for most of us.
I have also noticed, in myself, a subtle leaning towards historically plausible pieces, whereas 11 or so years ago when I started collecting, I wanted anything brightly colored or reminiscent of LOTR.
There's something for everyone man...I prefer it that way, rather than following someone else's preset guidelines as to what is good or fair or attractive, or whatever. I agree in that I find that sword ugly as well...but someone somewhere is gonna love it.

...I actually kind of love it, though I would have done something different with the pommel (too plain and metal dowel looking). It looks very steampunk to me, and that's something that I'm really into right now, so much so I'm customizing my boas' terrarium steampunk style. The hilt could stand to be a tad more elegant, but I believe that would defeat the point. Perhaps I'll do something like this (but better looking!) with some SLO I have laying around. If I do, I'll be posting it in the customs thread. Very cool find, Braveheart; I need to go see the movie!

I'll tell you truly, I LOVED the period Viking swords they had in the movie- even if the steel was inferior to what they came up with using the metal-skin from his downed ship.
I wonder though, that whole Shields game- any historicity to that?

On a ascetic level, its as ugly as sin, its certainly not elegant.
Looking at how its put together it looks very tip heavy which would make it a difficult blade to handle and a bit cumbersome. I should imagine it would not be a very quick sword , but once you get it swinging not a lot is going to stop it moving.

You know, not sure why they didn't try using period fittings with the new steel...the more I look at it, the less I like it.

I never said it was elegant. I said it would defeat the point if it were elegant.
