Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone owns or has some hands on experience with any of these four blades? CAS/Hanwei Mortuary hilt : I have seen one review on this one but any additional info would be appreciated CAS/Hanwei Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword : How is the basket on this one, nice and tight? CAS/Hanwei Revolutionary war hanger: I think this is the hanger I'll go with, the hilt is nicer than Windlass', but I like the tip of the blade on Windlass'. Windlass Pirate Hanger

I don't own any of these but I have handled the Scottish basket hilt broadsword. It seemed blade heavy to me but that is somewhat subjective. I'm pretty sure it was threaded so if the hilt were ever loose it would be an easy fix. Aesthetically it was quite nice though.
A warning. If you have larger sized hands, you may be out of luck. I had a hard time holding it because the basket was just too small. I believe it's historically proportioned though.
If your interested in the hanwei backsword, I think it has a slightly larger basket and a more balanced blade.
That's the only one I can comment on, I haven't handled any of the others.

I have the Windlass but none of the others. It is a light, quick sword. POB is very close to the guard. It's fun to swing around--haven't done any cutting with it. Quality is good, I think, given the price range. The fuller is a bit uneven on mine, but I find this somewhat charming.
You may want to look the grip lengths on the hangers according to KOA the Hanwei has a 3 3/4 inch grip while the Windlass has a 4 1/8 inch. I find the windlass about perfect (I don't have huge hands--glove size is large).
I've been planning to pick up the Hanwei Hanger so If you get it please post your impressions.

Jak, I ordered the Hanwei mortuary hilt but decided it wasn't my style and sent it back and got a KC viking. Nothing really wrong with it except I thought the wire wrap on the ends of the grip might bother my hand after some use. It was a little on the small side for me I guess.

Hi Jak, I own the Hanwei Scottish basket-hilt broadsword and I would agree with what Nathan said: it feels a bit blade heavy...handling is accordingly hard to get used to but still very manageable...it does have quite a long blade. Also, it's true the basket is not overly large, it's o.k. for me thought, and without the liner it would give more room...(anyway, I prefer a basket on the tight side than these huge-out-of-proportion baskets you often see on many entry-level repros)... Nevertheless, I still like the sword very much and would get it again: for it's type, in this price bracket, I think it's a fine example. And, as Nathan said, aesthetically, it's very nice

I've used both the basket hilt and the mortuary. REALLY nice for the money, or even for a little more money. You have to be sure to check the temper when you get them though as it's CAS weak point.

Thanks guys, I've ruled out the windlass and will go for the Hanwei hanger. From what you've said I think I'll take the risk on the Mortuary and then probably, in time, the Scottish Broadsword as well...my hands aren't overly large so I'm not too worried, I don't mind the basket being snug, as long as i can get my hands in there to grip it.
Too bad about the Broadsword being blade heavy, but, it wouldn't be my first sword with such a balance. Just takes a little getting used to....with repetitive training it will make the others seem that much faster. I intend to get the blunt counterparts to the Broadsword and the Mortuary eventually, and was going to pit them against each other...might leave the broadsworder at a bit of a disadvantage.... ;D

I've got the mortuary, if you want to know anything else about it before you actually get it.

I have the Windlass hanger, and I like it well enough. It looks really superb, better than I thought it would. In hand and in use, the blade is lovely, but the hilt not as much. The grip is narrow and round, which makes gripping it kind of odd. Despite this, the blade cuts very well when sharp, it's a light sword and pretty easy to control, though it's better at slashing than fencing-type point control and the very close balance point seems to take a little away from the power of the slashing stroke. It really is one of the best-cutting swords I own, I can dice up pool noodles with it lightning fast. But I bought mine more as a costume completer than a take-out-and-use piece, since, well, I used to get paid for dressing up like Jack Sparrow. It's pretty close to his movie sword, and was, at the time I bought it, the best version you could get. Now, though, that Hanwei Revolutionary war hanger has a hilt that is almost identical to the film sword, but the blade shape looks a bit dodgy to me. I'd really love to have that hilt on the blade from my windlass. That would be pretty sweet. If you get the Hanwei (or if you get the windlass), please post your impressions, I'm quite a bit interested in that blade.

Thanks for the input guys, I ended up ordering the Hanwei Revolutionary hanger today....I'll get the Mortuary in a month or so as I have a custom baldric being made up for the hanger at the moment as well. Hopefully if I put a catch on the locket of the Mortuary scabbard I can use the Baldric for that too.

Well, I got the hanwei Revolutionary Hanger in the mail today. Im very impressed. Very nice handling sword, well balanced....but even though I knew the measurements before hand....it seems so SMALL! I have no experience with sabres and the like so this is my first and I understand it's a Navy Style sword but it took me by surprise....but I like it. I'll do a proper review later perhaps once the baldric arrives. The spine is very thick (usually my Vernier Calipers are sitting on my computer desk for drooling over swords that I dont have yet, but I dont see them at the moment) I'd estimate about 6 mm thick and stiff, a very stout little sword.....
