Salut! Does anyone have any opinions on any reasonably priced scottish broadsword or backsword? Cold steel' Scot sword is fairly well priced on KOA and I think the fullers on it are neat, but Haweni's broadsword and backsword look more historical to me, (although I'm not all the way sure!) and I like the backsword somewhat more than the broadsword. If anyone wants to share anything on any of these I'd appreciate it!

Being a baskethead, I can recommend the Cold Steel Scottish Baskethilt Broadsword, especially for the price ! I purchased mine through KoA and am VERY pleased with the quality, strength, handling. It's currently my favorite "fighting" sword, until my ATrim/Darkwood Early English Baskethilt arrives. There is a review here at SBG /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=2009&page=1#34282 . P.S....I modified my CS by removing the basket- liner and the pom-pom dingle-berry tassel, as I just don't like them. And my hand has much better control of the sword as these things are out of the way. The CS baskethilt broadsword appears to be quite historical as far as appearance as I have found examples with very similar baskets, pommels and the 3-fullered blade. The dimensions and weight also appears to be within historical examples.
Que lastima, there are not too many baskethilt swords available in the mass-produced market. Just not enough folk infected with "baskethilt fever". But, once you get it, you won't go back.
This is my CS sword after removing the encumbrances mentioned above. And the CS vid of the sword.

Hi Xerxes, I just checked my site mentioned above and all the Baskethilts are unpriced following some recent changes, and are not seen under the British swords! How embarrassing... They should be $220ea USD for SS112, 113 and 127 as seen on www.stromloswords.com/swords.html but sbg members take $10 off, and another $20 off as I would have to put it on order for you. Regards, Rob

I like the Haweni's backsword better than their broadsword, it has better balance for cut and thrust than the broadsword.
Alvin: By taking the liner and pom pom really made the CS look ten times better. How do you like your Purple heart basket broadsword waster? That is the next waster I'm buying.

Alvin: ..........How do you like your Purple heart basket broadsword waster? That is the next waster I'm buying. I like it a bunch. It seems to be a very nice baskethilt simulator. I bought the version with the brass pommel hoping that it would balance more like an actual baskethilt broadsword. And it does indeed balance very much like my CS broadsword. I use the P-H waster in my practice while studying the Regimental Highland Broadsword online course of instruction given by the Cateran Society. By using a waster, I may receive a knot on my head, but I am less likely to be accidentally cut.

Alvin, I've always been interested in the CS basket hilt but I was never quite sure. It looks a lot better with your modifications. I'm curious to see what it looks like "under the hood." If you don't mind taking it apart, do you think you could post a picture of the tang?

It's an older model. The older (First generation?) CS basket-hilt claymores were made by a different contractor. The blades were somewhat different, in appearance, and the grip was wrapped with leather. There are also a couple differences with the scabbard.

It's true, there aren't too many options for an affordable yet useable Scottish-style basket-hilt out there. There are: -- Cold Steel. -- Hanwei -- Windlass
The Cold Steel has been discussed. The CASI/Hanwei basket hilts are quite nice looking, and the baskets are more historically accurate than the CS basket with it's odd forward gaurds. The Windlass swords are a third option. The windlass brass basket-hilt claymores are attractive, but are the heaviest of all the three makers, and the Windlass Steel-hilt "Culloden" has a basket large enough to drive a truck through (if you have real large hands, like the size of Shaquille O'Neill, this might be good).
The Hanwei and the CS broadswords weigh in roughly the same (right around 3 lbs, IIRC), but the Hanwei has a more forward balance and feels a bit clunkier. The Hanwei backsword is probably the best-handling of all the options. However, I have a CS broadsword myself and it's a decent cutting sword.

Thank you for the info Mr. Wilson. Very helpful. I prefer the latter edition myself. A very good explanation by yourself.

I'm not quite there yet with these types of swords, but Jim- you've got a good looking one there. Was the liner that big of a deal?

These are now being sold through CS' Special Projects Christmas sale in place of the other broadsword they ran out of. I wasn't going to bite until I saw that pic without the felt and dingleberry. Without the crap, the sword is beautiful! So, I snatched one up.
