Anybody seen/read about/used one of the Masahiro Highlander Kats? I just found them on swordnation last night, and wondered if they're worth cutting with. It lists the blades as High Carbon steel, but I suppose that doesn't mean much. It worried me that they were at the 45 dollar price point. So, any experience?

While it may actually be a decent blade. Not that i think it is for many reasons. The bigger issue is the tsuka. Having held swords like it designs like that. Well to put it simply they tend to hurt. And not in that way that just takes time to get use to.
Then comes the issue of the tang. Is it full tang, can it be taken apart for a full cleaning. Just from looking at it that doesn't seem to be the case. There are some sub $50 blades which aren't great but don't blow. Sadly i don't think this is one of them. It is cheap enough to just say flip it and go for.
But in the end i'll just pass.

That's sorta the sense I was getting from them. I don't really know much about the Masahiro kats, but they have some nice designs that are sub $100, and some that are just a hair more than $100. If I knew more about them as a whole, I could judge better, I suppose.

I'll be watching to see if this thread gets closed... Highlander sword threads tend to get jack up around here, and I have yet to figure out why... but I am SUPER curious. As for my take on this... the tsuka design of Highlander style swords is VERY tricky to do well, and no way its done well at that price range. Buy if you want a pretty wallhanger... avoid if your looking for a user sword.

Masahiro's a bit touch and go with regard to quality, but if you get a good one, you've got a really good one, you know? For $45 it's worth a shot- it might be that diamond in the rough they're famous for...then again, it might not be.
What site did you see those on? My sister is a huge Highlander fan so she might be getting one of those for Christmas.

So, Masahiro is a subsidiary of Master Cutlery? Interesting...for a long time I wondered who was behind them. I have one of MC's wallhangers from the Eragon movie, Brom's sword...for a wallhanger it is pretty well made and balanced, considering it is advertised as stainless steel.
I also have the Masahiro Bamboo katana, which IS a good sword- almost let it go too, til I found out what a gem it really was.
I just visited the site- I actually like THEIR version better than the 'official' United Cutlery version. I bet its a better sword too, for only a 1/3 of the price of the official UC one. Oh yea, my sis is gonna love it! Thanks for posting it, Chuck.

Anytime! Let me know what she thinks of it, I might snag one for myself, see how well it's made. At 45 bucks I can afford to shatter the tsuka. That's why I pay for health insurance.
