lol, yes, i ordered the custom pommel sharp classic medieval sword, the ring belt (which I am still learning how to tie) and the 2 strap frog, it came today and the order # CFB486AE-4AB00029-403-15C93C
btw, came about 1 hour ago, and I am really pleased with it, especially with the sharpening and the pommel design (in fact sharp enough to cut through the paper and into my finger while I was trying to get it out of the box) but as I said before I am quite pleased with AoV service and products
If you do lean towards a Gen 2 or Windlass. Mention that it is your first sword at Arms of Valor, Ltd. and we will give you a 15% discount.
Thanks for an incredible offer! I will have to peruse your site again, and have a good look.
you need to be stronger with one hand to cut a bottle as supposed to just using both hands and well, you need to have technique.
I understand that upper body strength can be an issue when dealing with heavier/single handed grip swords. However; I do have more upper body strength than most women. In my mind, I feel that starting with a single handed sword would be easier for me. I could be wrong, but that's what my 'gut' tells me.
As far as my like for the Claymore, no basket hilt for me. I simply do not like that design for myself, personally. Aside from the blade length on some that you all have recommended (and apparently as such being two-handed, or hand and a half swords), why do you feel that it's best that I start off with a longer bladed sword?
Thanks again, so much for such friendly responses. This forum truly rocks!
i disagree... the smaller the target gets, the more technique you need not to mean you obviously need to swing the sword. I learned my technique with a one handed sword (yes, my CMS was my first sword, but not the first sword I have ever touched) and I wasn't that strong when I started hacking at stuff, so strength will not be an issue and the only way to get your technique is to swing that bad boy, so enjoy
But I think all the swords that have been recommended would make a great "first sword" purchase. The first big decision is longsword or arming sword. After you decide, it might be easiest/best to just pick from the list what you really like in the way of aesthetics. I can almost guarantee it won't be your last/only sword purchase. The second one can be your first choice from the other type. That is, unless you decide the type you picked is really great for you and you want another of that type that is quite a bit different, you know, just to round out your experience.
That's how I started. And now... oh brother.

Victoria, welcome the SBG.
you've got some good questions here let's see if I can help: I think being left handed makes little to no difference in cutting but it will make a difference in fighting once you get around to doing that.
You love Claymores and scottish/Irish/celtic culture and there are some swords out there that will fit that. you will need to shop carefuly however if you want to get a good one. I certainly reccomend staying away from the CAS/Iberia/Hanwei lines. the only Hanwei European swords that are worth their price are the Hanwei/Tinker line. there's not a lot in that line to be attractive to you though. the H/T Viking MIGHT be workable as a celtic weapon especially considering the interaction between the Celtic peoples and the Vikings, espacially the Irish, but I'm not sure the H/T Viking would be good for you as it looks to me like it is a heavier sword and probably has a POB further out than you may be ready for. I am thinking you might like the Gen2 offerings if you want something that is visibly celtic. that's where I'd look if Celtic design was my top priority.
the sad thing here is you have to choose between a really good performing sword and a sword of the style you want. the reason is simply that in our price range there isn't much that performs well and is identifiably Celtic. Gen2 is probably the best option for looks with good-enough performance.
if you are looking for a sword that has great performance and is generic enough that it could belong to almost any culture from a wide variety of time frames then the Valiant Armory Practical swords: AT303 arming, and AT304 Long swords are good choices.
the Hanwei Tinker line Viking and Norman swords seem like good swords but they are much more culture specific. even the EMSHS is a bit more specific feeling (to me) than the VA swords but it's hard to beat the Hanwei/Tinker line in performace.
if your gut says you will have an easier time with a one handed sword then go for it, especially since you plan to try out SCA fighting eventually where you will be required to start training with sword and shield. single handed swords do seem like a good fit for you.
The Gen 2 ring hilt longsword is a really beautiful weapon and is probably one of the lightest longswords I have handled. I have never cut with it but with a good sharpen it will stand up to most cutting targets. The only possible downside is that the ring hilt can be the weak point of the sword and snap or otherwise break if used incorrectly. I have very little upper body strength so I find that I prefer a sword I can get two hands on, though the Gen 2 ring hilt is light enough that it could definitely be classed as a true bastard. I wouldn't suggest learning to use a single handed sword first because they require more skill than a two handed sword does for a beginner that is. Also the single handed sword takes longer to get used to, I am still getting used to my Wraith even though I love it to bits. My suggestion is get the Gen 2 irish ring hilt, you won't be disappointed especially as it is your first sword, it can also take a beating as well

Here is a short video I just made. I am a sword and shield fighter and prefer a single hand sword to a two hander. I have developed speed, power, and finesse with a single hand sword. This takes time and training, but you will get there with practice.
If your budget was a bit more, there is a very nice Armour Class 2-handed claymore in the classifieds. Armour Class is a top notch maker that doesn't get a lot of exposure or credit over here.
As far as your first sword, go with your gut feeling, as ShooterMike said......more will follow.
