To be honest, I don't really know. In fact mineral spirit is a mild solvent which may play a small role in dissolving some of the silica film and removing remnants of metal polish. I could be wrong because silica film is very difficult to remove and mineral spirit might do little or nothing. But as long as it removes the remaining metal polish from the blade it does it's job well. My reason for using rubbing alcohol because it is cheap and I could get it at my local grocery . Also rubbing alcohol, from my experience can't remove silica film so you might need some kind of metal polish (noxon, flitz, metal-glo, nevr-dull to name a few) Yeah I switch to silicone spray because the oil would not stick to one of my blade. Fed up with weekly oiling, I spray it, wipe it and it is good until I use the blade for cutting session. No plans to do hybrid polish on any of my blades anyway lol. For katana owners (especially folded blade), if you are planning on using hybrid polish or traditional Japanese polish on your blade don't use sillicone spray cuz sandpaper and stones won't work well with silica film....Unless you have no plans to do so and hate having dust sticking on your blade.

Cheers Utilityslave sicheah and RicWilly i appreciate all this you guys are legends!
Like i said i don't mind oiling but even with the motor oil i have to do it once a week to once a fortnight as i have it hanging vertically and all the oil just goes straight to the tip end of the blade leaving the hilt end exposed.
Also my blade gathers a lot of dust and damn bugs that get into the house. It's quids on if a moth get's in the room it WILL land and stick to the blade and i'll have to clean it again.
I doubt i'll polish it my main concern is rust protection.

Ric, so would the silicone film help protect my Tenchi from getting rusty? that blade seems to want to rust if it even gets near water

I would think so, Monger. None of my blades have wanted to rust as long as I use the silicone properly.
