It was awesome. ;D Hannibal was one fantastic warrior... took out 90 thousand Romans with an army of 15 thousand ill-supplied and badly trained warriors with superior tactics. :0 ;D -Slayer EDIT: Spelling

That was off the top of my head, so the specs *MAY* be a bit off. No worries, though, Centurian Ricustus! ;D The Romans squelched him in the end. -Slayer EDIT: What is it about this thread that makes me spell like a 5 year old?!?!

The Romans defeated him the same way the Germans eventually defeated Rome. They learned from their enemy.

Indeed they did; he never could take Rome...but he sure gave'm hell when he was there. Indees, he was the only man to scare the Romans into their own city for years at a time. I myself, although trained and interested in Japanese swords, am also a classicist of Latin and Ancient Greek. I might also like me a gladius I originally wanted the ones that were in all the documentaries and films- but Deepeka? Yikes! They might be somewhat better than what a Roman might have- but I'd rather not take my chances. Is this Scorpion Knives brand good? And full custom blades for a reasonable price? Just thinking out loud here for, y'know, the future (sorry if I'm de-rail the thread lol, I just love me my gladii and spathae)

I don't own a Scorpion knive yet but they got a very good review and if you understand enough about blade making you'll find out that they have a great heat treat and such. Me, I'm looking forward to get one of their blades for Christmas.

Scorpion Knives...you mean Chris (archerout)? If that's who you're talking about, he's got a lot of new products, all very attractive- and he makes them himself or so I gather. For the money, you can't go wrong as far as customs or one-offs go. I'm not thrilled with his scabbards but they're functional, if a bit chunky.
I guess it boils down to what you want it for- then you can proceed from there.

I would probably want a spatha, and be able to USE it a lot without it breaking. I have a friend working on a sketch right now

The blades I saw on Chris's website looked really good, and the prices looked reasonable. I might get one of his products in the interim while I research my gladius. They look much better quality than a lot of the other products I've seen.

Hmm.. what about Del Tin gladius? The downside is that they are unsharpened. Are they historically accurate?

Hmm.. what about Del Tin gladius? The downside is that they are unsharpened. Are they historically accurate? I found this on MyArmoury: I'm checking some other sources out on it, too. It's specs look correct, though it may be leaning towards the short side, but I think that steel guard plate should be recessed into the guard and it should be brass; and there shouldn't be a ricasso. About the guard, I think Albion uses bronze on the Allectus, so it looks like that was also used in addition to brass. I'll post more when I get some responses on some other forums.

The only issue I have with the scorpion knives is that a few of their blades seem way heavier than they should be for the type of piece it is. Apart from that I think he does brilliant work for an amazing price and all he has to do to make his scabbards more aesthetic is to round them over on the sharp edges.

The sword of subotai and the sword of valeria. I'm not saying they are bad or anything I am just saying that comparing lengths and weights they seem overly heavy.

Out of curiosity, what is the difference between a celtic spatha and a spanish spatha? I'm assuming that there is some design difference.

"Spanish spatha?" Never heard of that To my knowledge, the spatha was developed through contact with the Celts who used longer swords. I may be wrong, but I don't think there is such a thing as a "spanish spatha." So I geuss that would meen that there is no difference

As Celts lived in Spain it might just be a typical celtic sword of the time. If you mean celtic "longsword", not roman spatha of course.
