Hey everyone,
I need to send out a sword for warranty repair. I'd like to use a new box instead of the one it came in. Does anyone know where I can get a shipping box that's 4.25" x 4.25" x 48"? The OfficeMax and Staples near me (in St. Augustine, FL) don't have them, and the closest Office Depot is 30+ miles away.
I appreciate any information you guys can give me. Thanks.

At 4.25" it sounds like you're shipping a katana. If you are, document shipping tubes are good for that.

Why yes, it is a katana. Thank you both for the suggestions.

They make so many different styles of tubes now it's ridiculous.... I know this 'cause I buy from electrical supply distributors. I always thought pvc pipe would work too. Just gotta figure the ends of the pipes out. It would be darn near indestructible.

You can get caps for PVC pipe ends, but I think PVC pipe would be unnecessarily heavy to use for shipping. Would drive up the cost!

Make your own box out of cardboard.

Sending it back for warranty repairs eh? Just wrap it up in a paper bag and throw some stamps on it. Just kidding, do like they said...

I ship all my blades in PVC pipes. It's hard to explain but you figure out a way that it slides in only so far, and stops. Then the point can't possibly protrude past the tube. It protects the blade from being warped during shipping etc.
Hank - don't laugh. The lady at the post office said that someone had taken a set of two knives, on the display board, wrapped it in brown paper and put it in the post. They didn't even attached the knives. They came off a conveyor belt and a knife flew out. Sad hey?

As for PVC adding weight, you can buy lighter weight PVC. It comes in different thicknesses.

You could use a cheap gun case from Wal-mart.

It would be a little wider than you want.....but you could ask at your local skateboard shop if they have any boxes used to ship longboard decks....The price might be right...FREE....It's worth a shot.

Either make your own box out of a larger box or use a cheap plastic, foam lined, small rifle case from Wal*Mart. The rifle case will cost a little more more to ship (I have one here at is 8"x3"x48"), but it can be re-used and will protect the sword better in the end.

Iuse the usps priority mail triangle shipping tubes "if it fits it ships" they are 40 inches if its longer than that , slide one on to the other and make it as long as you need . Then tape the heck out of it . Oh and i use peanuts to pack with not news paper, usps wont insure it with news paper.

Go to your local gun store, they will have all the long strong cardboard boxes you need, you may want to shorten them or pad them out.
I reccomend wrapping the sword in bubble wrap (or sword sock) and using 2 or more cable ties to ensure it doesnt slide around (plus it makes it harder to steal).
Regards,
Rob

Went to Wal-Mart, and as it turns out they sell (among everything else) 4' fluorescent tubes, which means they had a box handy. Billiam's correct (thanks again!), it fits just right.
Sword goes out on the morrow. I appreciate everyone's replies.

This is what I'd do if I didn't have a sword box on hand; but it so happens that I have several- you never know when you'll need one or more. The Fedex triangle tubes are particularly sturdy- so long as you pack the sword in tightly, there should be no problems on the ship or return.
