Hey guys Today I finished my latest project, a custom mount of a Tinker Hanwei Longsword blade. I'm really happy with how it turned out. Here are some stats. Overall length: 45" Blade: 35" Weight: 1.3kg PoB: 4" Now I let the pictures do the talking. Here ya go: The grip is thick leather with a leather over cord wrap. It feels phenomenal in hand. Peening the pommel was a bit of a challenge but it worked out well enough. This tip is like a needle, it thrusts through everything it put in front of it. Handling is awesome. This swords flows through the movements and is so fast. I LOVE IT. Comments welcome! Thanks for your time.

Forgot to add, when cutting it makes a wonderful ringing sound. Kinda like the VA practical longsword in shooter's cutting video. Now I wonder if this means that something's loose or so. I know there are some swords out there that ring like a tuning fork but I don't know if this affects the overall structural integrity. Any help?

Does everything seem tight? The guard looks a little bit behind the blade shoulders. If everything's tight, ringing is usually regarded as a good fit

That black stuff is leather. I knew I wouldn't get the blade's shoulders even enough to get a good looking fit so I put a layer of leather between guard and blades shoulders. Now there's virtually NO gap between guard and blade. And yes, everything IS tight. I had to hammer guard and pommel onto the tang. So no worry there. It's just that my other sword, a custom mounted tenchi ko kat does not ring at all. And I know that the tenchi IS tough. Amazingly tough. I hacked it into tree limbs and everything and there's simply NO way to get the hilt to loose up or something like that. Now that the tenchi doesn't ring but the Tinker does I was kinda worried. But maybe it's just because the Tinker has such a long thin blade while the tenchi is a MONSTER. Very thick and massive, absolutely no flex in that blade.
Why is ringing regarded as a good fit? Do historical swords ring as well? I handled a couple originals but of course I didn't cut with em so I don't know if they ring or not.

Katana don't ring because they aren't as flexible (deformable) as european swords. Nodes of oscillation apply to euros and not katana for the same reason. The best answer I can give off the top of my head is that when things are tight you don't get losses of energy through loose fittings (e.g. damping) and the blade can oscillate at its natural frequncy, producing a noise (e.g. resonate).

Congratulations that is awesome. It looks like a really fun sword. Very unique too.
The ringing is a good thing. It means everything is tight and snug. If it were rattling then you might have an issue. Katanas don't ring because of the way they are constructed. The tsuka essentially dampens any vibration. If you take the blade from a katana and mount it like a European sword it will ring too and wobble a little actually. (I've done it)
I've got one of the single hander blades right now. I'm debating on how to go about hilting it, especially the peen. Did you cut off the threaded section? I've been debating about leaving it on and using it as the peen.

Oh, the damping effect of the tsuka makes sense, thanks ncavin... good point!

Thanks guys. I noticed that when gripping the blade during halfswording it doesn't ring. This seems to prove that the blade is the reason for the ringing and not the grip. Very nice.
I cut off the threaded portion. I wasn't sure if it was welded on. It was very soft, softer than the rest of the tang.
By the way, I crying a bit... I never get a karma :-(
Just kidding.

If you want, I could make a review. I'm just not sure how informative it would be since I changed so much, in fact everything except the blade.

Nathan, I could send you some pics (or post them) of how the tang looked like before peening. That might help. peening actually wasn't that easy. I'll talk about that later.

Sure. Any info on how you did the peening would be awesome. I've done one cold peening before on a windless sword but never a hot one. The job you did on your sword looks massive and really sturdy. I was actually considering buying the longsword blade but I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I bought the one hander since it was cheaper and it was going to be an experiment so I didn't want to spend too much. Looking at yours makes me wonder if I should have gotten the longsword! I suppose your pommel is perhaps two inches in diameter? How long did the grip come out to be?

I've never given karma before. Is it supposed to go to a PM screen?

Yes it is, Nathan.
I like it overall, but I don't think I'd personally go for that style of guard.

Yeah I'd have to agree on that. My personal taste tends to lean towards large crossguards but it's just that, personal taste.
Still a great job!

Thanks guys, for all the positive feedback. The project sure was a lot of fun. A lot of work, too.
Nathan, did cou get the EMSHS? That seems to be a wonderful sword. You might want to check Tom Kinder's custom mount of such a blade. Very helpful.
