So, by my last check we've got over two and a half thousand members - that's pretty huge! The read before posting thread on forum rules has been viewed by almost twice the number of members we have. That's pretty cool, people have been checking as to how they have agreed to behave by posting on this forum. What I find interesting is when people post outside of the rules and then try to justify why they did it, or say that they didn't do anything wrong. (Now I'm as guilty as anyone of sometimes pushing the envelope but I'm not talking about bending the rules a little.) Human nature; she is a funny beast.

I'm a relatively new member, but I've noticed a generally high level of civility here - with one or two exceptions, of course. Folks seem to also tend to stay on topic fairly well. Maybe the fact that we all share an interest in a period of history where politeness and civility were more highly respected than today has something to do with it.

I'm guilty as well of pushing the envelope, I think most of us are. But you're right, theres a big difference between taking a stand on something you know to be true and just stirring trouble. Theres been a few posters of late that has really made think "WTF is this person thinking?" I believe there are those who just like to be trolls and that'll never change.

I believe it's insecurity caused by a lack of maturity. It takes a grownup to be able to see when they're wrong and to understand admitting it doesn't make them less but rather more.

Brilliantly put, Ric. You continue your role as both the jester and the sage here at SBG, my friend. +1 karma. ;D -Slayer

I think RicWilly pretty much summed it up.
I'm somewhat of a lurker. I was reading this forum for several years before I even made an account. Mostly because I was more interesting in learning than sharing my very limited insight. That habit has kept me out of many an argument.
It's a little sad but I think being so open and tolerant brings both the good and the bad. On a lot of forums the strict codes and hard lines would eliminate both as well. I'm not sure that you can pick and choose very easily.
We have a very open and friendly forum but it's open and friendly to everyone, for better or for worse.

Thanks, Slayer. I should say I don't mean "grownup" as measured by years as I've noticed this ability in a remarkable number of young people on this forum, you and Jonathan for example and more. Gives me hope, it does. This awareness came late to me and is elusive yet at times.
True enough, Nacvin. Freedom has a price, eh? Gladly paid, I think.

True enough, Nacvin. Freedom has a price, eh? Gladly paid, I think. Agreed. I have witnessed many times the more suffocating pressure of the rules/mods on some of the other sites... and tho it may encourage the occasional rampant troll attack, I'll pay the price for the freedom we enjoy here gladly.

I'm a member of three sword-themed forums including this one and all of them are very civil in tone. So I think you are on to something here. I believe it's insecurity caused by a lack of maturity. Or a lack of maturity period.

Seconded. But then there's the other side of that coin, where one will attempt to make use of a rule (or rules) in order stifle discourse due to the inclusion of one or two 'keywords'- is it because of a personal grievance, a lack of tolerance for those not like them, fear, immaturity, inability to come up with something worthwhile other than an attaboy post- or some combination thereof? To me, that is funny, in a sad way because it only shows the close-mindedness of that person, to the detriment of the board.

Lack of respect, perhaps? There are plenty of places appropriate for discussion of topics which are against the rules here. This is Paul's forum so his rules should apply. We are just guests here.
