Hey Thumper, thanks for posting this. This sword has been for sale on ebay for several months at least. There is a lot of speculation (well founded I think) that this is a forgery. A tell tale sign to me is the apprearance of a one-piece pommel. As far as I know, that's pretty much unkown in this type of multi-lobated pommel. Still, it's an interesting image for sure.

Not exactly in the sub-$300 category huh! How does the pommel attach to the tang? It almost looks like it's one piece, but that doesn't make much sense. Interesting link!

Traditionally the pieces of the pommel would have been stacked together and then peened. I believe this to be a forgery, but it's still neat to look at.

That is a post "Viking" era Slavic sword, they were used later in the slavs hands than in Eruope, so for late date style, could have a solid pommel, Was waiting for some of those to show up....SanMarc.

Would the later date Slavic swords still use a short Viking-style cross? I thought they typically used more of a medieval style cross? Much like the Irish and Scottish who put five-lobed single piece pommels on some Type XII single handers up into the 13th century. Anything's possible. We are finding out new things all the time. It would be very interesting if this sword were reliably dated. But the fact that it's on ebay, not in an auction house somewhere, makes me suspicious.

Oh I hear ya, but the slave used the older typ longer, as they wernt converted by the christans intill the 1300.........Then you see the "Cross" gard....SanMarc.
(It surprised me that the slavs were using that typ of sword longer than the Norse, but you learn new things every day....)

Yeah, there are some 13th century swords that look like typical 10th or early 11th century viking swords from Finland.

I posted a thread about the recent Staffordshire Horde in England, in the history section. It has several richly engraved and adorned golden guards and pommels. It appears it is a part of or related to the Sutton Hoo Horde. This stuff is a true treasure of knowledge. www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk/artefacts/

Its supposed to be Slavs and Vikings having a go at it!
