So, having purchased my first sword, I'm in the market for number two. While I can swing some, I can't swing much and it appears about $400 US plus shipping is my limit (though I may be able to extend that no more than 20 bucks if necessary). I'm looking seriously at the Malatesta, but toying with the idea of making the next purchase a falchion.
Here's my dilemma. I adore Gus' falchions, but I hear his waiting list is pretty long, and they're a little out of my price mark. I like the look of the Windlass falchions, but they aren't even in the same class as Gus', and I was taught that Windlass was a dirty word. Del Tin's are pretty nice looking, but I don't really know a whole lot about them and they appear to come unsharpened, too.
I would love to consider a custom sword, but I believe that will be significantly outside of my price point, though I haven't contacted any makers. Just that, in my mind, "Custom" also means "Pricey". I've toyed with the idea of a talking to the gentlemen at DSA about doing a custom piece, but again, I believe custom is well out of my price range.
SO, with that said, I come to you fine folk and ask for some advice. Any suggestions? The Malatesta is still the frontrunner, but whether it's my 2nd or 3rd cutter, I must have a falchion for my collection. Help me, SBG forumites! You're my only hope!

I'm not one of those that says "save your money and buy an Albion instead of that Windlass", but for a mere $50 more you can get one Gus's falchions so I would have to say it is worth it. All the others you mention are not in the same performance class as the ATrims. And since you are so close to the price it seems logical to make the extra push. As for the waiting list: Contact Christian Fletcher ( cf@christianfletcher.com) and find out. It might be less time than you think.

But are there other options than the ATrims?

Maybe it's possible to have one made by Scorpion Bows, called archerout on this forum. His prices seem to be very decent. I've never handled or owned any of his swords so can't say much more about them. You can also find him on his website: TraditionalArcheryBows.com

My distributor price list has a tenative price listed for a Valiant Armory Signature Falchion - along with the Hedemark, Actium, Malatesta, and Crusader. So, apparently one is slated to be made, its just a matter of when.
I'd save my money and wait for it. It is coming apparently...

If it's anything like the other Signature swords, it will be truly drool worthy. The Malatesta is looking better and better for my next purchase. I was promised 2 purchases a year (thanks to the fine folks at the Bursar's office). However, I still want opinions! The more, the merrier. Thank you for the info, Odingaard.

If VA made a messer...It'd be mine right away.
Falchion...that would depend on the geometry they select; it changed quite a bit over its service life.

Call or PM all our resident bladesmiths and discuss what you want. I'm pretty sure one or more of them would be happy to custom make exactly what you want at a surprisingly low price. Especially if you have cash in hand. I'd be willing to bet most of their waiting lists are closer to three months long rather than three years long. It never hurts to ask. I just wish DSA made a production falchion to match my medieval knight sword.

Chuck the VA "Practical" Falchion just might be the answer to all your woes if you can hold on a little longer for it to finish production ........ I'm in for sure

You should really contact Eyal about a custom piece, you might be surprised when he will give you his price tag. VA will be a good option, but that will be in another 6 months or so i guess... And Scorpion bows if you like their style, might be just perfect. As for Windlass if you keep the blade short you shouldnt have any problem, so with their falchions i think its worth taking a chance. If not the grosse Messer by cold steel is quite good ( which isnt the case for all CS swords.. ), mine as gone trought some abuse and its still fine as the day i opened the box.

As usual with all your pieces, Brendan, I'm in love, but your stuff is out of my $400 price range. But man that is freaking GORGEOUS. And exactly what I want out of a falchion. Additionally, I won't have the money I was going to put towards the Malatesta until January or so.

2 Things: 1- You will NOT be disapointed with a FB. I have two; the Sword of Garrigal and the Fantasy Tactical Wakizashi, and I adore both. Brenno is definitely a good way to go... 2- HOWEVER! Valiant Armoury will be coming out with a Practical Falchion based off of Gus' Courtrai Flachion pretty soon, and it should sell for just over $200. This would likely be the best production Falchion available for under $400, and it costs only half that! Yeah, I'm pretty excited about it. ;D Anyway, that would be a great choice as well, although you would sacrifice the bit of customization you'd get with Brendan for a more manageable pricerange. Just my $.02, as always! ;D HTH, Slayer
