I haven't seen this posted here yet, but forgive me if it has. I thought this was an interesting contrast to the recent one where the student killed a potentially dangerous intruder with his katana... "WHO LEFT THIS COKE CAN ON MY NIGHTSTAND?!?!? I'LL *&^$ING KILL YOU!!!" Sep 20, 12:27 PM (ET) BRYAN, Texas (AP) - A man who was apparently was upset after finding a soda can in his room allegedly used a sword to cut two of his roommates. Michael Angel Zamago was jailed on Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon related to family violence. Bail was $25,000. A police report indicates Zamago was upset to find a soda can in his room, thinking someone entered without permission. Zamago allegedly used the sword to poke holes in a closed door to a room where the pair fled. One roommate has a cut under his right arm pit. The other suffered a cut in the shoulder area. A jailer who declined to provide his name said there was no record of an attorney for Zamago.

You know, the topic of laws restricting sword ownership comes up from time to time, and I have to say - it doesn't worry me too much for a few reasons:
1. Laws don't get changed due to incidents like the one above. These news articles get published under the "weird" category, people laugh at idiocy, end of story.
2. The U.S. can't even keep track of people who own guns - how're they going to effectively regulate various sharp things?
3. Think they haven't got bigger fish to fry these days?
Just some thoughts.

good point however they are still making sword owners look bad Actually the "they" you speak of is an irresponsible and likely hot-headed sword OWNER who probably should not be allowed anything sharper than a plastic spork. The problem with laws restricting ownership of anything is twofold: 1. Criminals will ignore the law, even if the penalties are extremely draconian. 2. There are a certain number of individuals in society who, although not necessarily criminals, have a dysfunctional personality/mentality that really has no business with weapons of any type. Unfortunately, there is no way in a free society to reasonably restrict their access to those weapons. I want to live in a free society, so I read stories like the original and cheer the kid who defended his home, then I read stories like this one and cringe.

It DID make me laugh though - the thought of the two hapless roommates cowering in the closet as the kook in question repeatedly jams the sword through the door at them. It's like some kind of f'd up magic trick of the insane...

Hell, I'd a just cut the can in half. That was my first thought, too. I mean, you've got a sword in your hand and there's a soda container sitting on the nightstand...This guy obviously sucks at math. He couldn't put 2 and 2 together. ;D

The article doesn't specify - maybe he DID cut the can in half. Then, satisfied with the weapon's cutting capabilities, he decided to test it for thrusting. ;D

Another moron with a weapon. It does put sword owners in a bad light, but I'm sure if it hadn't been a sword, it would have been something else. Probably only newsworthy because something different was used to inflict bodily injury.
Hairu-- Tighter sword laws?! Partner thats exactly what we don't want. Look at the anti gun movement. Everytime something happens, they start screaming for more laws to protect the sheep and make sheep out of the rest of us, all the while ignoring the fact that we already have too many gun laws. And as Gearloose said: the criminals don't have any regard for the law in the first place. So new laws will only serve to restrict those of us that follow the law.
Jayferron-- The govt is NOT supposed to be KEEPING TRACK OF GUN OWNERS.
Ricwilly--You da man!

shoboshi - I only meant that in a comparative sense. i.e. SINCE the gov't is UNABLE to keep track of firearms, how would they keep track of swords? I know this is a sensitive topic to some - rest assured, I was speaking in the hypothetical.

I got you man. I guess the point is that some people do think they are supposed to keep track of gun owners and then still others that want them to. I think the govt is far too involved in our lives already.
And you are right, it can be a pretty touchy subject. Didn't mean to offend.

Offend? Not at all!
For the record, though I don't happen to have any firearms myself, I'm a 2nd amendment fan.
