You can't have bo-shurikens? That is strange because they are basically a round cylinder or sometimes square with a point on the end, like a steel stake, you can make them yourself.

The star style ones are the least lethal of the lot and bo-shuriken are just as easy to conceal. Whoever makes up these weapon laws really has no bloody idea what they are doing. You could even make you bo shuriken like mini spears then if anyone asks or has a problem with it, tell them they are spears. A good javelin point with a solid shaft make fantastic bo-shuriken, though you have to balance them properly.

Hairu: Quite honestly if you want to learn about throwing and the dynamics of throwing make your own. It is really easy to make bo-shuriken. Take lengths of square steel about 8 inches long and grind one end to a pyramidal point, make sure it balances in the middle. It is really that easy.

It's ran by just one guy, Ragnar. He gets overloaded sometimes, if you want to find the same type of throwing knives, I can recommend other places. His customer service is usually great, I hope all's good with him. But, if your still interested in bowie throwers, I got some links.

Question: Practicality of distance aside, just how much damage could a shuriken do? The ones I've seen don't appear to be particularly mass intensive, which should (and would) seriously reduce the energy they bring into the impact.
Also, they're short -- unless you got me in the eyeball, I don't think you could reliably damage something vital.
Axes, on the other hand, even if you don't hit me with the blade, are going to hurt.

M, I may be speaking out of turn here, as this is outside my area a bit. But I believe shuriken are used more for stunning and distraction than for a kill shot. Having said that, take one to the temple or the back of the head and it's lights out.

Also weren't they tipped in poison frequently? I mean in ancient times.

Depends on the type of shuriken M. If you are talking about the star shurikens, then they are designed as a distraction and unless you hit someone in the right place in the neck it won't kill, also in the eye is probably not likely to kill either. Now if you are talking about bo-shuriken, considering that some of these are heavier than throwing knives, you could drive one straight through somebody, not to mention you can also use bo-shuriken as a close combat weapon. In the past shuriken were dipped in poison and that would definitely kill you from a scratch.

To give you an idea of how much it be worth bugging Ragnar, look at this. Their basicaly the same knives I have, but I paid $40 for three. Or Rags sells them for $15 apiece.
