I have a question about fittings, in particular menuki. I'm looking for fittings for a future custom sword and I'm going with a very unique theme here. I might end up getting the fuchi and kashirae custom made. This sword is going to be for cutting, and I will have the menuki put on the ura side, so they fit under my palms.
With that said, what is the general thickness of menuki? You can never tell looking pictures online, because they are all straight on pics not showing the sides at all. I realize you don't want it to thick as it will make to big a bulge in the ito. But what is considered pretty standard? What about the type ths is just a small circular shape about dime sized? Wanting to still put some bulge in the ito to facilate a nice grip.
Thanks

The thickness varies a lot, 3-5 mm is common... yea thats pretty much it. that great thing about menuki is you really don't feel them under your hands while cutting. so you can really go with any design. there one of the few things on a katana where you really can but in some detailed design and not really worry about the piece being tough.

OK that was the part I was wondering about, with gyaku setup, was the general shape. Does it usually go better with an elongated one rather then just circular one? Looking at the hand it does seem it would, so it fills the gap across the whole palm. I'm asking becuase I may end up making my own menuki to get the design with theme I want. That's some I feel I can do, as compared to a fuchi/kashirae

If you have some swords in your posession you can reverse the grip and get a feel which is the best. I prefer small 3mm thick and 1" long menukis for gyaku, but then again I have small hands.
