So the official reproduction for Longclaw from A Song of Ice and Fire had up until now only been available as stainless steel, but they've now announced that there's going to be a limited edition pattern-welded steel, theoretically fully-functional version of it available sometime next year for around $600. They've already posted pictures of the prototype on their site. Assuming that they actually make it properly functional, I'm saving up for mine starting right now.

Damascus doesn't automatically mean functional...

The pommel of this sword turns me off. It's too large, too striking in contrast. It doesn't look like it belongs. Looks like someone took a nice sword, cut off the pommel, and attached their meerschaum pipe.

Yes, I asked for more info about the construction, but I expect it to be functional, since that was the whole point of doing one out of something other than stainless steel because too many people were refusing to spend that much on a wallhanger. As for the pommel, I don't think it's perfect but I do like the look of it for the most part.

the pomel would look better if it has a bit more of an aged look, its just to white and shiny.

I agree, the pommel looks like a plastic toy someone just stuck there. Love that guard tho.

You can also have what is called damasteel which is only really viable for short blades as I understand it. Why make a beautiful blade then have crappy parts?

The contrast of the pommel really gives the sword a comical look.
Though, maybe this is just me, but doesn't the whole sword look kinda photoshopped? As if the blade, the hilt and the pommel all come from different pictures?

Just remember that for some people "another 200" is significantly more than they can afford. I agree about the pommel looking a little out of place, that's something I would want to change somehow if I could, but I like the rest of it, and I know I'll probably never be able to afford to have a replica custom made. I think I'd be darn happy with this if I were to get it, unless it ends up being significantly less functional than they say.

For $600 I can get a custom that will be both more functional and more beautiful than that piece of crap.

Nice looking fantasy sword, seems a bit overpriced to me- but how's the craftsmanship? Anyone ever handled one of these Valyrian swords before?
I'm inclined to agree with BW, for that price, there are a number of well-known and trusted options out there that're pretty much guaranteed to perform.

I understand some people don't like the look, but the only fault I have with it is that I think the pommel is a little too bright. As far as handling goes, I don't have a clue. I assume it would probably handle about the same as the stainless steel version, if anyone has that. If it handles well then I think it would be worth the price, at least to me, but I have no interest in buying a really pretty crowbar so we'll have to wait and see, I suppose.

I absolutely love these books, although I have to admit I'm a little disappointed in Longclaw. The blade looks cool, but I don't think they got Ghost's head right. It looks a little too neat and toy-like for the rest of the sword. Just my opinion, though.

I myself LOVE the "A Song Of Ice and Fire" series, but this is just disappointing. The handle is both oversized and looks plastic, and looks like it's just an overpriced SLO with the "Official" brand- like a crappy movie sword. Plus, the aesthetics don't even look like what I can think anyone imagining the actual sword would look like. I mean, it's big and clunky, and the handle, to reiterate again, is just terrible! For $600, I would MUCH rather have one of the new special Odinblades or save a little more for a fully custom one or a Fableblade. Then I could get fantasy aesthetics that are both usable and have great, functional blades. My $0.02, of course, it just annoys me how much the "this is our official product, it sucks, but you're gonna have to pay a ridiculous premium" mentality prevails. I mean, couldn't they make even MORE money by making it cost less, come from a good forge (say, Darksword, who are already capable of making 'fantasy' blades), and THEN being able to advertise it as being functional? It just makes more sense to me. Sadly, more cash is in the SLO Once again, my two unhappy cents, because I just feel like it ain't living up to some of my favourite books of all time (just finish A Dance With Dragons, argh!!!) [endwrant]
