Does anyone own this sword? www.casiberia.com/product_details.asp?id=SH2385At 1lb 10oz this thing must be insanely quick. I would be very very interested in reading an independant review on the sword. Every since I received my Qi Jian the one-piece construction has really intrigued me and I'm considering tracking down this sword, but at that price tag I would really like to get some opinions first.

it is available at www.reliks.com for like $1949 or something. Wonder how much Kultofathena will retail it for.

If I am not mistaken, the wootz Han dynasty jian are not build for cutting. They make great display/gift swords though. Also Hanwei might make some cutting jian and dao designed by Scott Rodell some time in near future.

show me the tang construction. If the description from CasIberia is accurate, the sword is one piece construction which is like the Hanwei Qi Jian and it is as "full tang" as it could possibly get. Although I am concern whether the Wootz jian is "functional" as in functional for cutting which I personally doubt. Nevertheless it is a great looking sword. But $2K is alotta dough

Interesting piece.
I know that the so called "lost" technique of producing wootz steel was duplicated by Al Pendray in the states over the last decade or so, but this is the first time I have seen wootz steel in a production blade. You have to hand it to hanwei. They do push the envelope somewhat.
Who would cut with a sword that costs $2K anyway?? After all, thats what production blades are for! ;D

Interesting piece. Who would cut with a sword that costs $2K anyway?? After all, thats what production blades are for! ;D I cut quite regularly with my 2,000$+ Wave Katana. It's the most expensive piece in my collection, but I've found that the price tag doesn't necessarily mean it's a better cutter Still, I swore off wall-hangers a long time ago. If I'm going to pay that much for a sword, I want it to be able to make clean cuts on Tatami cut after cut.

How come nobody will make a good Han Jian? (unless somebody can speak to Garret's work?) I'd buy one, heck, I bet a lot of people would buy one. They're really attractive swords.

Bryn, Check out Swordsage's review of his Han Jian he bought from Garret. It's quite informative. I'm talking to Garret right now about a Han-inspired Jian that I designed and want to have created.

I guess the market for Chinese Jian, let alone Han Dynasty Chang (long) Jian is very small. Rumor has it that Hanwei is making some cutting Jian designed by Scott Rodell some time in near future. Even so I doubt Han jian is in their catalog. The most affordable Han dynasty Jian at this moment would be to get one custom made from Garrett and Jin-Shi.com. I've ordered mine with a TH blade almost 5 months ago and still waiting... If anyone is interested, I can do a short review when my sword arrives...

Very cheap for the wootz (bulat, crystalic damascus). A raw blank for a knife can be as expensive as 1000 euro. If the wootz in this sword is real - it is a real bargain.

Violent: How do you find the Qi Jian? Hanwei make the claim on a few of their pieces that they are one piece construction and I am interested in one of their other pieces with this claim and I wonder just how good it is. Also the Qi Jian looks really good.
As to this wootz jian thing if you look at the stats you get an understanding why it has such a low weight, I would like to know the point of balance and a few other things, though I wouldn't buy a hanwei chinese sword for any serious cutting.

Bloodwraith: I plan on doing a full review on the Qi Jian as soon as I get it sharpened (hopefully by Tom), I might try myself, but my belt sander is on backorder from the vendor. But I can tell you that it's not what you expect from the pictures. It is a gorgeous sword, amazingly light and quick the POB is only about an inch from the guard the temper is unbelievable, I've held the blade tip and let the weight of the sword bend it over and it returns true every time. It also sounds like a tuning fork when you lightly tap the blade against the scabbard.

It also sounds like a tuning fork when you lightly tap the blade against the scabbard. Please KEEP THAT BLADE AWAY FROM MACHINES.... The potential for the blade getting warm enough at the edges exist that it could lose its temper... and then of course you would lose your temper. There is a reason that good swords are hand sharpened. This is probably the most important. The FPS of a belt sander can generate quite a bit of heat. There is also the possibility of being careful enough not to, but even with someone that has used the belt sander everyday for the last 10 years is a chance i wouldnt want to take. Please be careful... after all $500.00 is a lot of money if the job goes bad. Respect to you dude.

Yeah, that's why I'm wanting Tom to do it. I've watched his sharpening videos, and think I understand them, but while I might try on my sub 300$ swords I worry that I'll mess my qi jian up. I'd rather leave it to a professional.
