Oh my! This Christian Fletcher person is a man after my own heart. Is he the designer/creator? I'd Love to talk to him concerning my design and its feasibility

Awesome design VS. +1
And regarding that CF sword, I think thats the most beautiful hilt I've ever seen. I love Ivy as you may have seen, and those Lorien leaves look awesome. Even the little etch on the pommel sets it right off. I love it.

Nice design. +1
My only concern is that the pommel looks too small, both from a design standpoint and from a balance standpoint.

I love the leaf-theme... its given me some ideas for future swords I might want to talk to you about, Brenno... think your up to it? Wes: Mr. Fletcher actually did not design that one... he worked from the sketch you see in the pics in the link provided, it was a customers idea. However, the exicution is BEYOND beautiful in my eyes... a true deadly work of art.

Looks possibly painful to use, very painful to wear on your hip. The long handle and huge ridiculous pommel will get in your way if you look to perform any saber type moves with it. The very tight/non existant radius where the guard meets the base of the handle will be uncomfortable to use and will pinch your hand.
Personally, I think the japanese maki type wrap looks tacky, and the whole pommel thing looks hideous. I think you should design something following the "form follows function" rule, it's not just crappy steel and workmanship that makes a sword into a wallhanger.
Hope you are not put off, you posted on a public forum, and I take that as asking for input.

I feel like if my artistic skills were better I could represent my idea in a way that would make more sense. I love swept-hilt rapiers and if it was designed how I imagine the basket would follow a flared pattern that would comfortably surround the hand. The extended pommel should be a tad larger than what I drew. As for the comfort on the hip, most rapiers are worn slung low on rapier frogs so the basket wouldn't dig into the hip. I dunno. It all seems to work in my own mind, lol!

Not bad for a fantasy-inspired piece...Sam kinda banged you out there, but he did make a salient point about form following function. I like the guard; I think a sword like that would make one helluva conversation piece as a wall hanger.

Interesting. The blade somewhat resembles a Havström saber - a very peculiar Swedish 19th century sword I could probably make a whole thread about: I agree with Sam on the point that the thorns on the basket may be painful depending on how it's carried. The main trouble with fantasy swords, I believe, tend to be decorations getting in the way of practical issues. That's not to say the sword has to be boring, but it's usually a good idea to research alternatives - there are many ways to make a basket look fanciful. I actually kinda like the elongated pommel, though I'd worry that it would dig into the wrist during thrusts. I've had similar ideas myself, and my solution would be to have it curve forwards somewhat. But again, it's a question about balancing aesthetics vs practicality. Some sacrifices must always be made either way. I disagree that the pommel would be too light, though. It's narrow but all in all it's not very small, plus the swept hilt itself will add a lot of weight. Honestly, I'd worry less about balance and more about keeping the sword as light as possible.
