Hello good people of SBG, I am beginning to contemplate my next sword. While normally I am strictly a historically accurate euro sword fan. I am thinking of branching out and getting a fantasy sword. I’m just not sure what yet. So I thought I would see if any of you people could suggest some good options. My basic wish list would be: 1) Must be functional. 2) Must be well balanced. 3) Must be a sensible weight. 4) Either one handed or hand and a half. 5) Must be historically plausible (I want something that when you look at it, its possible to think that it could have come from a real culture all be it from a parallel reality. 6) European style 7) I want a nice finish to it, 8) I like things that are subtle, not overly showy but still elegant I would have to be able to import it in to the UK so that excludes curved blades so it would have to be a straight blade. As for price, well that’s a difficult one. For the right sword I’m prepared to pay the right money, lets just say it I’m looking at the mid range swords £300-£1000(about $400-$1200). These are all well out side my price range but you get the idea of the style I like www.odinblades.com/Pages/Glawar.htmlwww.odinblades.com/Pages/Celtic%20Wolf.htmlwww.powning.com/jake/commish/progress4.shtmlSo lay it on me what would you suggest.

There's talk of an SBG Fantasy Bastard Sword being made that is right in your price range: /index.cgi?board=projects&action=display&thread=12200&page=7 Or maybe you could spring for a custom sword by Brendan Olszowy? You could discuss design and get something made just to your liking, I believe. Though I don't know about pricing, it would probably push your budget depending on what he thinks. www.fableblades.com/index.html

I have had a long look through brendans stuff, while I can see why people love his swords they are not quite to my taste, I think his handles and guards are a little to busy for me. Having said that, his Gurthang comes pretty close to what I would like. www.fableblades.com/Gurthang.html

I really like Odin Swords. John Lundemo is a genius with steel and a true gentleman as well. Can't go wrong with John.
Not too familiar with the other site, but the pictures look awesome. The wood carvings are breathtaking and the steel is so active. Wow, just wow.
Tough choice. Wish I had that problem.

Kingrat, I think we have similar criteria on fantasy swords. I too prefer the fantasy but could be real. Decent weight and handling are required. Fableblades is having a clearance sale on some of Brendan's older work and this sword really caught my eye. For a Fableblade it is very inexpensive. www.fableblades.com/Edward.htmlIt is a fairly simple design with nice flowing lines. Certainly hand a half. Excellent finish. I actually hesitated showing you this as the longer it doesn't sell the better chance I get of saving up enough to buy it myself. But I'd rather it find a good home sooner than wait for me

Having said that, his Gurthang comes pretty close to what I would like. www.fableblades.com/Gurthang.html Thats the beauty of having custom piece made my friend... Brenno will make what YOU want... not what he wants. When he makes swords from his own vision, he makes what he likes and hopes someone else will like it and buy it. However, having had him make two swords for me I can tell you, if you send him some drawings and ideas... tell him what you want to see the sword look like, he will make what you want and it will be amazing. It will be YOUR desgin, hand made with attention to every detail by a guy who knows what he is doing. I see the three links you posted... all amazing swords... and all leafblades. So it seems to me your looking for a nice, functional leafblade sword. Fableblades is certainly a VERY good option... trust me, you send him the designs and he will work with you to make what you want. Also, as mentioned, BKS may soon be doing an SBG Fantasy sword... there is talk of two options being made, one a leafblade, you may want to look into that. Also, you could contact BKS directly and have them make something more specific to your tastes. Fable Blades and BKS are your best bet for a custom hand made sword similar in style to the ones you pictured in the links but within your pricerange.

Yeah for sure KR. Get in touch. We can chat about your faves and together we'll design you something that you love. As Sean has mentioned I'll do whatever sword you want. We will develop a clear vision of what we are creating; and when you see it transcend into reality you'll be very happy I'm sure. To quote my latest custom client: "viewing the pictures just increased the desire to wield "The Archer"... they became excactly what I was looking for" I actually have all these ideas swimming around for some subtle while special, more historical typeology pieces. Especially now that I have my fullers sorted. woohoo

Oh, I'm pretty sure Mr. Wood is familiar with Albion, (this IS the guy who did the review of the Agincourt and the Squire) but they do historical designs almost exclusively and he wants a fantasy blade for his next one. Man, I'd trade family members for that Agincourt, tho. So beautiful..... /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=11052&page=1#178029

Brendan I may very well take you up on that, expect an email at some point in the next week or so. Here is another example of the kind of thing that is attracting me, see the Daeris towards the bottom of this page www.barrettcustomknives.com/contemporary_swords

Haha, Kingrat, I think we have similar tastes in fantasy swords--that was my favorite sword on that page. Here's a design I drew for the SBG fantasty bastard sword the other day: (Post #166 in the thread here: /index.cgi?board=projects&action=display&thread=12200&page=12 )

LOL just read your postre my Albion reviews, didn’t think anyone ever read them. Yeah I have a few Albion’s and while I love them, I want to try something different.
I like your design, it would suit me perfectly if it was a little lighter in the blade. But otherwise it’s just about right. I particularly like the aggressive point. I have a thing about swords being pointy.

KR, I look forward to it. Try and get a clear image in your mind of what you'd like, and we'll put it together on paper first. I'll help in anyway you need. I like Barretts stuff

The Betrothal also caught my eye, even though it is a bit plainer than Daeris or Daedroth, it still displays a simple elegance that is very appealing. One has to wonder about the price point if his work, have you any ideas what they sell for? Chuck

Great stuff on there, for sure. But I'm pretty sure those have all been previously sold one-offs. If you wanted one it'd have to be a custom piece to wait months for, and judging by the price of his available Japanese blades, I'd say the cost would be $3,000+, easy.
Those leafy, nice longswords sure do tickle my fancy, some new favorites there, but when I went back I was surprised at how much I liked the "Raven's Claw" one, too. Perhaps in my ideal sword world I'd carry the Daeris at my side and the Raven's Claw slung over my shoulder as a back-up. ;D
