Or on the closing weekend. They Hate to take stock home with them and sell it cheapest on the last weekend. There's one particular shop at the PA RenneFaire that I make sure to go to every year now. They set up shop in this building made to look a bit like a ship and have a huge selection. That's where I met Angus Trim. he was working on a couple of his bigger knives in the workshop in the boat. Touch ups and final bits, mostly, I'd wager.
Besides, I always love "Trust The Pirates!" Sure, they're wall-hangers, but I got a Hobbit sword for $30 and an "Excalibur" for $50. Made good gifts to people who like the stories but have no desire for real blades.

On occasion you might find a deal at a Ren Fair if its a rainy weekend. The key is to know your sword prices and start haggling at half of what you think it is worth. ^ This... Or on the closing weekend. They Hate to take stock home with them and sell it cheapest on the last weekend. ^ ...and THIS big time. When I can, I always go to the last day of a RenFaire... because, as taran said, they would MUCH rather sell it, even at fairly sizable discounts, then cart it around with them. This is even more true if you go to the last day of a RenFaire in the fall season... because its likely to be the last Faire a vendor is going to that year... and so anything they don't sell will sit around all winter and wait for next Spring/Summer when the Faire season begains again... so they would much rather sell it. Of course... this is mostly for leather goods, clothes, and crafts... I still would be very unlikely to buy a sword at a RenFaire unless I find a small smith whos work I really like.

They REALLY want to get rid of it.

When I was a kid (before the internet and places like SBG) the renfair was the only place you could see something even approaching a real sword.
I think we get a bit spoiled by how cheap we can get halfway decent swords that have been produced by cheap labor overseas. If a guy at a fair is selling costume or "real" swords that he makes himself, they'll likely be more expensive than a better quality sword you can purchase online. No one really wants to put their time into making products for $5 an hour. I know I wouldn't. But yeah, I wouldn't generally buy a sword at a fair any more than I would buy one at an Army/Navy store. Though there are some fairs where real vendors show up with the good stuff, or so I hear.

The problem is most Faires do not have makers like yourself, Brenno, Matt, Sam... or anyone from whom I would actually WANT to buy a sword. If they did, I would be willing to haggle with them (I love haggling at the Faire... "What, 700 Gold peices? Good sire, that is a heft sum... the blade is fair, to be sure, but I think 500 gold would be a more fitting price, don't you?") and buy their wares. BTW, I've mentioned this before but, I normaly bring hundrads of $1 coins in my pouch to the RenFaires a pay with them... makes it feeling more like 'Old Tymes' for me to pay with coin. I'm a dork. ;D

The new 1 dollar coins are gold tho... and the old ones silver. So I sometimes get a mix... Gold and Silver pieces! Perfect for feeling like I was paying with old world money. I really look forward to going to RenFaire's soon with my Fableblades... have to get my scabbards made. I want people to ask me about em... so I can send you new buissness. I REALLY look forward to getting one of your more traditional hilted swords so I can do that... I love the tactical style... but most RenFaire people would go NUTS for one of your full on swords... and I could send a LOT of buissness your way. ;D

Oh, some folks have been saying that you are required to be in garb at SCA events. This isn't quite accurate. your are highly Encouraged to be in garb. But not required. Though it is greatly frowned upon to wear blue jeans to Feast.

Taran is technically correct you don't HAVE to be in garb. You do have to MAKE AN ATTEMPT to be properly clothed however. There is almost always someone who will lend you what you need so you don't go to the feast "naked". Besides "dressing up" is part of the fun.

Sean...ok man, you do take it to whole nother level! LOL
I should not talk, though...pretty soon I'll be exchanging cigs for a pipe (but only at SCA and Faire events lol)! Never thought about the coinage thing...I think I like that idea, man.

hehe even before I got really into knowing about swords and learning so much, I wasn't impressed with what I saw at our annual Ren Fair. My wife and I go every year, and every year I stop by their booth, because well, they are swords. But they feel and look like bars fo steel, with cheap suade and wire wrapped hilts. Not to mention not even sharp. Then to boot, they are at least twice what I could get from one of the more reputable Euro blade stores mentioned here. I once bought a dagger from a guy at some event er other, can't remember what it was now. Cheapley made, unsharpened, but looked pretty, and inexpensive. I bought that, just to flesh out my Ren Fair costume Last year my wife and I each bought one of those handmade books with the handmade paper inside. I use it for my personal journal, and it's great. Big thick thing, nice cleltic pattern on the leather, nic thick paper that is a dream to write on, so smooth and soft under the pen. Probably the best thing I've bought at a fair in a long time. hehe

Interesting... some kinda weird flute, but I have never seen the type before... what is it? It's called a harmony flute. It's essentially two flutes in one body, the shorter one tuned a fifth harmonic above the longer.
