So with conversations back and forth, I accepted the duty of doing a remount on Maynar's new Musashi Gekkou.
Before
Dis-assembly
Cleaning up the seppa
Samegawa replacement
I decided to replace the existing panel on one side, as it was made up of two pieces.
Gluing & wrapping said replacement panel.
After a dry assembly, which I previously assumed, the thickness of the seppa, tsuba, and fuchi together, were thicker than the previous ones. Thus a problem arose, which I assume you all know. The mekugi-ana on the tsuka, didn't line up with those of the nakago. Not a big deal at all. A little work and bam!!! They fit. I shaved a mm of the fuchi and habaki. I also shaved less than a 1/4 inch off of the tsuka. Since we are doing katate-maki or battle wrap, it will not effect the final wrap. So in other words, there won't be a gap between the end knot and the kashira. Also because we are doing katate-maki, another problem arose. The bottom mekugi-ana. It will reside under the hira-maki aspect of the tsuka-maki. So I am going to drill one new mekugi-ana where the last set of hineri-maki lie. There should be enough of the nakago left for this endeavor, with out being a safety issue. Safety is of the utmost, as Maynar with be using this katana.
The ho/tsuka on this katana is haichi, and Maynar enjoys rikko style. So I gave it a bit of a trim on what would be the mune of the ho. Thus, a cross between the two, and without diminishing its structural integrity.
shaved a bit off of the fuchi
shaved a bit off of the underside of the seppa
shaved the bottom of the habaki
shaved the top of the ho
You can see where they used a saw to cut the original samegawa, to fit the fuchi
shaved down the waist/middle of the ho
I drilled the new mekugi-ana. I have access to a fine shop at my work (hospital).
Here is the finale.
before and after shot (well the after shot is on the top)
