I decided to buy a Bishops Mantle from Von Sussan. It cost $165. It is stainless steel, flat riveted weighting about 7 lbs. The Bishops Mantle is similar to an aventail except that it does not hang from the helmet. It drapes around the shoulders. I decided to add some hardpoints at the shoulders. They were easy to attach, I just tied them them on to the mail vial strings. mysite.verizon.net/tsafa1/armor/bishops mantle008.JPG[/img] I rather like how I am able to rotate the mantel forward or backward to to get it perfectly over the shoulder of the sword arm. It does not matter too much how it sits on the shield side. For two-handed swords I would center it more evenly. I did some pell-work and while the positioning of the mantle can be adjusted buy lifting it up and rotating, once you lay it down the rivits hold it into position. mysite.verizon.net/tsafa1/armor/bishops mantle010.JPG[/img] I bought this specifically for Melees. To cover my upper back and chest which is now exposed. I generally don't get hit in the upper back unless I am crashing through lines. You easily imagine how it will fit into my armor kit. The Bishop's Mantle will cover the area right up to my Kidney Belt. Now I just have to see how I like fighting melees in this.

Will maille protect you from rattan swords?

It would do nothing to protect the joints. That is why I tied in the shoulder paulderns. On the back and chest the mail will take the sting out somewhat. I occasional get hit there now with almost no protection and I just shake it off. So it is a step up.
I do have a solid coat of plates I wear if I am expecting to do nothing at all other then crashing lines. The Bishops Mantel also adds some more razzle-dazzle and class to my kit if I end up staying with it. Of course I may just end up selling it in a few months like I have done with a lot of armor.

Are you going to wear it on the outside of your garb, or under it?

It goes over the gambeson, so it will sit on the outside. The shoulders currently tied to the gambeson will be removed since the mail has its own shoulders tied to it (I have two sets of shoulder pauldrens).
Another way I could have done this is to tie some leather onto the gambeson at the shoulders. In that case there would have been a layer of 14 oz leather between the gamb and mail. The plates are too bulky, so they have to go over the mail rather then under.

I think that your armor kit will look nicer as well. You don't have any problems with the mantle shifting during combat, do you?

And here I thought you were dialing down the protection... Sily me. I should never take you at your word.

Jonathan - I don't think it will shift because the rivets seem to cling to cloth. I am wondering if the rivets might shred the gambeson. I was getting some shredding from the plates too. Better the gambeson shred then my skin If the rivets were welded rather then riveted, I might have to put a strap on the inside that ties the mail to my upper arm to keep it in place. Taran- It's only for melee I'm not about to give up any speed in singles combat I want to get some more experience fighting in mail. I want to see how my shoulders move. Its part of my learning experience. I had a mail hauberk before but it was butted so it moved smoothly but of course was not battle worthy.

At the very least, it looks good.

I have decided to sell this mail first chance I get. I decided it just does not work well with the rest of my armor. Not in a rush or anything. Eventually I will run into someone in the SCA who would like to try it out.

lol, that was a cute video. I don't think he would be laughing if he was getting hit with rattan. The mass makes a big difference.
