I was wondering if somebody here might give a beginner sword collector some help here. I found this sword on a South African auction site similar to ebay. After reading everything on this forums I am a bit hesitant to buy from places like that. But seeing as it is a private seller I am wondering if maybe it might not be worth (aprox) US$150?. But I think I might have seen pics of this before on either SBG or SFI. www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/15567841/Chinese_Sword_Damascus_Steel_Blade_Hand_forged.html

Unless my eyes are playing tricks with me, it is the same sword
If the vendor is trustworthy in your opinion, try and ask him a few background about this sword (where and when it is produce? Any scratch on blade, looseness in fittings...etc) I don't know about market for swords in South Africa, but $150 for a functional sword seems pretty cheap in the United States. I don't know, it maybe a good deal, or it may not be.

Thx, will ask a couple of questions. It is very cheap even for here. I ordered the Hanwei broadsword locally and that set me back $250.

Not a bad looking sword; would help to know who manufactured it.

I would be really hesitant to buy from there. Ask LOTS of question and gauge his responses to see if the seller seems genuine. I've seen lots of scams with those types of swords.

It's only $150...I doubt the seller is trying to tell the buyer that it is anything but a sword. It would be different if he were offering it up as an antique blade with some sort of provenance but I don't get that feeling from the OP.
Also, at that price, it is well within the limits of SBG's mission of cataloguing sub-$300 swords- so why not? IF it is a wallhanger, the OP still might consider buying it, if he wants it enough.
