Was just looking over the famous Ilya Repin painting (below): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Repin_Cossacks.jpg...and it struck me again how, for all the minutiae argued about with "right period" and "right style" when it comes to scabbards and suspensions, how functionality can trump it--and then form the basis of new fashion. Note the kozak in the foreground with his back to us. His suspension system? A "baldric" of simple double stranded cord tied in to his scabbard rings. Could be tied just as well to a scabbard w/o rings, which is what I've started doing to some longswords. Note: it's an easy technique, easily adjustable, for hanging angle for comfort or just to walk around obstacles or people. Easily removed or put back on if need be, e.g. going in and out of doors. And good cord is just as durable as leather--though this is just as easy with leather of course. Not to mention that none of this is necessarily "low class" either. The kozak is using nice cord by thee way too. Golden, perhaps even gilt. The kozaki may have been rough-and-tumble, but that's not necessarily synonymous with austere. (I'm reminded in similar fashion of other groups, the Landsknechts for instance.) Anyway, some loose but connected thoughts--on how sometimes people make things just more complicated than they need to. Not just when it comes to either functionality and aesthetics, but both at the same time.

Hey, I'm happy for'm, but I can't say I dig that rig...and that's just personal preference. I'm sure you've noticed there are some who are such sticklers for 'historicity' that they'll weigh in on just about anything to get that point across. I am not one of those people, but I know what I like, and it isn't that. But it suited them just fine I see- they look the type to just go with what works.
No offense meant; thanks for sharing.

Well, who knows--tights under pants? Might be where long underwear was born!
