A buddy found this 60 years ago in an outhouse. ;D We know it's a Saber, I think it may be a British version Patton [1908-1912]? It feels light in the hand, very responsive,I liked it. Markings are; DC 30 E X /90 ,94 GG1 G1 Any information would be appreciated. Thanks for looking [

It is a British Pattern 1890 cavalry Trooper's Sword. The stamps indicate it was made at Enfield (E) and that it was issued in 1890 and reissued 1894. The broad arrow above the WD shows it is War Department property, and the X indicates that it was sold out of service. I am not the best at reading British inspection and government stamps, so you may want to post this at www.swordforum.com in the Antique and Military sword section. As for the GG1 G1 and DC, I am not sure, but they probably indicate the units to which the sword was issued. Given the Canadian provenance, GG could possible Governor General (Governor General's Bodyguard?) and the C in DC probably stands for Cavalry, but I have no Idea what the D means. Just guesses, though. Was the blade repaired? It looks like it cracked at some point. Regardless, it is a nice sword and a great (luck) find!

You are welcome. If that is a crack, then I would advise against using it because it would probably break. BTW, it is definitely Canadian! DC=Dominion of Canada!

Do you have any pics of the GG and GG1 and other markings? How about a pic of the tip of the blade?

Thanks. I cannot see the markings in that photo, unfortunately. Did you see my reply re: the DC marking?

That's no problem. I meant that I discovered that DC means "Dominion of Canada".

Nifty saber. Certainly the most random thing to find in an outhouse, ever.

Thanks for the additional pics! The '90 on the spine confirms that it is a P1890 cavalry trooper's sword. And as for the markings on the grip, I am positive it is actually GGBG, which would be Governor General's Body Guard! I have seen a number of P1908s marked to this unit, but this is the first 19th century pattern I have seen that belonged to them. Your friend has found a great piece of Canadian history! I imagine Google will be useful in researching the GGBG and its history. PS--The tip may have been blunted for drill purposes, but could also be blunt due to simple wear and tear.

Where is the picture of the repair? Sorry. I did not no that if you delete pics on photo shop that they are also deleted from the forum too. Sadly some of the pics are gone. I restored what I could . I'm new to posting and will not make that mistake again! :-
Thanks for your reply.
