I must say that at first, the look of S guards really wasn't for me. But now I have grown to really like the style, and am wondering if anyone knows anything about them (historical origin, etc.). I am considering modifying the guard on my VA AT303S, but I am not sure this style of guard would be appropriate. Any feedback would be great. Attachments:

here is an article from myArmoury...sort of an over view if hilt designs. The "S" type guard I feel would be in line with a Medieval sword. www.myarmoury.com/feature_hilts.htmlThe Del-Tin 5155 Gothic I own has this type of guard. cheers, Bill

One of the most simple yet elegant ones I've seen was on the Durer Bastard sword by Arms & Armor. In fact, there's one for sale in the Classifieds...oh, he took it down and put it up on eBay.
That's a shame, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
You said you wondered if it would be appropriate for your 303S - do you mean historically? Probably not...but why should that matter? I think it'd look good...and the guard that comes with the 303S is a bit on the long side so curving it into an 'S' shape would only help the aesthetics of the sword.
Its a good idea...might consider doing it to mine, soon as someone posts how. lol

I prefer the much more exaggerated form like on the Svante Nilsson sword.

Well I decided to just do it. It turned out very nice, I did all the work in a vice. I bent a little bit at a time, going down the guard. I will post pictures soon. It really is an improvement in my opinion.

To me, a S guard on a XIIa seems out of place. I mean it could be historically plausible...but not historically typical. On a type XVIIIa...yeah it´s right at home.

I say, if it looks good and you want it- go for it.
