I suppose that this may actually already exist somewhere but.... I would like to propose to moderators, administrators, and people with ridiculous amounts of knowledge, the following resource for forumites.
A permanent page with diagrams, vocabulary, and explanations of physical characteristics of the sword types that we most commonly encounter in this forum. For example: Longswords, arming swords, sabers, Katanas, Waks, Dao, Jian, rapiers... I guess those are the ones that spring to mind. I occasionally find myself confused when reading katana reviews, and I'm sure that some of our dark-side brothers feel the same when we start spouting off about the forte of the blade etc.
If this already exists, can somebody please sticky it permanently?
Edit: Never mind about Katanas, it already exists and is stickied. Can we get the Oakshotte typologies stickied and diagrammed?

Can we bookmark 'em permanently? So they show up in the top section of the screen? Or are they already there?

I know the Japanese sword forum (a sub-fora of SBG) has a sticky on Japanese blades, but I don't see a corresponding one for Euros...maybe Paul can get an e-copy of Oakeshott's Records of the Medieval Sword, or at least the diagrams of the differing typologies for the new members. Of course, it might already be available, I just haven't found it. I'll wait on others to weigh in on this. You could bookmark www.myarmoury.com on your own using your internet browser; that's probably the broadest resource on sword reviews and such.

Names for Chinese names for parts of a jian and dao is pretty difficult to find. I stumble upon this link at SFI: forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=95527Not a very good reference (especially without any Chinese character), but better than nothing.

We already spoke about this a couple of months ago, and some thought that SBG wasnt the place to put examples of the Oakshotte typology, but i still think that it would be a great idea.

Some people felt that the information was available on other sites so there was no need to start a new one, possibly less accurate, here. Well, they changed their minds, or at least stop objecting, but the list didn't get very far due to lack of participation. /index.cgi?board=euromedieval&action=display&thread=11158I think a list of sword terms would be an excellent idea. When I read katanna reviews I feel like I'm in a Peanuts cartoon and the adults are talking.

LOL @ the Peanuts reference
I sometimes feel like that too...especially when the jargon's bein tossed about but I muddle through it and eventually come to understand what was meant. Only because I'm too lazy to look it up that I bother reading into how the word's used and in what context. I think that might actually be more work.
