I just bought a sword over the weekend. Like it, but neither I nor the guy selling it could recognize it. It was a screaming deal, so I bought it and figured I would parse it out on my own time. It looks to be Asian, maybe Chinese with an ox tail blade (I think?). No more than 50 years old I would guess, probably much less. Hand made for sure with wood handle and sheath, simple lacquer. Very simple and traditional. There is a hand carved inscription and some notches on the back of the blade, plus what looks to be an inlaid bit of copper or brass. Does anyone recognize it? Know where it might come from?

Click the reply button, then click the icon that looks like a picture. Sandwich the link for the picture in between the little IMG boxes. Voila

Totally! A Dha. I had a hunch it was Laotian, but it just didn't look right. That explains it. I know nothing about this sword but I am excited to learn. Thank you very much.

erikvance, you right-click on the pic you want to show, select "View Image" Copy the address in the address bar when all you have is the image Paste that address to your reply box put " " before the address and "[/img]" after it. (leave out the quotes, of course)

What're the dimensions? I bought a sword much like that one on eBay a few years back...it was marketed as a dha I think...looks a lot like that one there.

This is Thai Dha (or Daab ) but it did not came from Aranyik (which is the sword maker center from the old capital Ayotaya ). The alphabets on the base of the blade are Thai Alphabet pronunced "Solmee" it is sound like a male name but I could not recognize it as a Thai name ,The smith may came from Cambodia or Laos but stamp his name with Thai alphabet. I read some where that the two S stamp sometime was indicator that the sword are mean for tourist but this sword's lack of decoration indicated otherwise. The ratio between the blade and handle indicated that this is a large size sword which we called Daab Yai (yai mean big in Thai ) . The tang appear to be what they called rat tail tang which is tradition mean of attach the sword and grip .
You should rent the Thai movie called " Bang Rajan " they accurately depicted the ancient way of fighting with this dha (mud , blood ,shirtless , shoeless and all ) . This is a nice dha with character.
