I was playing around with heat coloring as mentioned by Brenno on the "Help" thread (second page) in the Japanese swords board to see if I get a decent amount of color and control using a blow torch. here's what my AT303s Arming sword looks like now. and I have to say I really like it. what do you guys think? I'd call those colors "medium-dark gold" and "bronzed purple" this is definitely something I'm going to be playing with.

I'm not a fan of heat/salt-bluing components, but if you like it, I love it for ya.

It looks nice. Did you dye the grip and scabbard yourself?

Its not about the grip/scabbard its about the crossguard and pommel, If you take a good look you will see a blue color.

I know that, I was just wondering if he dyed the leather himself.

Ah I'm sorry, I think its the leatherwork the sword came with.

That means Tom would have had to get it custom ordered.

Why is that?

ok let me explain:
the leather on the grip and scabbard is all the original stuff that came with it.
the cross guard used to be a standard steel-silver color; now it is golden. the pommel used to be the same plain steel color as the cross guard and blade but now it is a purple-ish bronze color. I thought the colors stood out pretty clearly in these pictures.
I did the color all myself. with a hand torch.
here's Brendon's post that gave me the idea to try this: /index.cgi?board=japaneseswords&action=display&thread=11761&page=2#191770
this is not a final condition most likely as I am trying to learn to do this well and will need more practice.
NOW what do you think?

Did the leather come blue, or did you dye it blue?

vyapada, that's a really good question. I don't know but I think it just might.
Jonathan, I think you need to check your monitor settings, the leather is black. there's a glare of light on it from the flash but I still wouldn't call it blue.

Did the leather come blue, or did you dye it blue? Umm, the leather looks black to me Jon. Perhaps the flash is playing tricks with you.

It looks like a royal blue to me, but my monitor's settings are default.

Also looks royal blue to me, and again I also think my monitor settings are default. Maybe just something wrong with my eyes.
Anyway, it looks nice. I like that it isn't too brightly colored, but just enough to stand out.

It does look blue. I blame flash.
