Sorry to derail the thread there for a bit. The classic medieval sword looks like a safe bet, I've heard it's one of their better models. I say go for it if you're interested and write a review.

No apologies needed. I think he should just go for it as well. Hey man, you can sit on the fence all day and think about playing, but if you sit too long you'll miss the game altogether. I did a bunch of research before buying my first sword a few years back. I ended up saving up and getting the most sword for the money. I got an Albion Sempach and loved it! Just go ahead and buy it already, you'll be happier you did. And as for the Classic medieval, I picked it up from KOA two days ago.

I understand where you're coming from, I really do. But I think you'd feel a whole lot better if you reframed the way you were viewing this decision. If we go with the metaphor of the kinds of swords you love being like children you have, then you should probably back up a second and realize you aren't losing any of your children (having them taken away from you) by making a purchase. Because, unless I'm mistaken, you don't have any swords yet. What you are so afraid of losing is the IDEA of owning of this sword or that one, but that is a poor stance to look at the situation from. You are going to be spending your hard-earned money to obtain something that carries very special significance to you and that you have wanted for quite a long time. You are GAINING a sword, TWO even, not losing anything but the paper bills you have chosen to trade for it. You don't have any swords, and as interested in them as you are, it would clearly be better to own some great ones than it would be to own none and continue to worry and worry and worry. Some is better than none, I don't care how many other options and permutations you want to intellectualize of decisions that could have been made instead. Two amazing swords, whichever they may be, are better than none at all. Your other ideas won't be going anywhere or be taken away (why do you think ShooterMike still has a wishlist of swords?) but now you'll HAVE TWO REAL SWORDS. You are building a family, not losing one, and families are built one child at a time. Well, two in your case. And, let's be honest, making the babies is the most fun part in the first place. Each of your sword choices is very very good. There is no wrong decision to be made, only different types of good. It would behoove you to focus more on the good you will be getting with the choice you make than on the good you are "missing out on" with the choices you don't make. You aren't losing anything. You are getting the thing that you have been so desperately wanting. Enjoy it. This was a VERY good post and gets you a +1 from me.

I believe that my quest is drawing closer to an end. We will have to wait and see what happens, won't we?

I am like Treebeard in a way - I am careful not to be overly hasty when making decisions. The time will come soon enough, but until it does, I shall continue to gather what information I can. I don't think anyone would every accuse you of being overly hasty. I can just see what you're going through and it's sad to see you keep second-guessing yourself. It's a lot like the way I was when I used to freak out before a big purchase. Life's too short to wear tight shoes, man, I just don't wanna hear about you being disappointed when your sword finally arrives and you've over-analyzed everything to the degree that you lose that feeling of wonder and joy that you get with your first sword and you think, "Well, if only I'd have gotten such-and-such sword instead, then it would be better." I want you to be thrilled to have a REAL sword. Not like he'd need it, but that'd just be an excuse to get another sword...and another...then another... You DO realize that this is not goin to be some passive hobby, right? At least...it isn't for most of us here. Its different for a collector I think...but when you're a backyard cutter, you have an actual use and you just want to see how each sword is going to perform. That's how I look at it. Jonathan...I will tell you this one thing: when it comes to your OWN personal money, how you decide to spend it should only be by your own desires and no one else's. If you want to vacillate til the cows come home, feel free to do so- but do expect us to nudge you one way or another from time to time...we're not doing it to be mean or pushy, we just want you on board with the rest of us already!

Here here Ebon. Sorry want to derail again because I feel for Jonathan Jonathan, the last two weeks I've found even an experienced collector as myself caught in the "This one, that one" sword quandry. Tossing up between Hanwei Norman or GSoW ......... want to know the sad conclusion. ................................ I'm gonna order a VA Practical Longsword next fortnight when my tax return comes in ........... I just couldnt make my mind up and my wife said "Werent you gonna get into longsword training and get proficiant".......... so I'm going with that for bottle cutting prac and leaving some money aside to get a waster or I-Beam when I need to do training and eventually go to classes ............. Funny how it works like that . If you gonna get two blades now do it the FIRST time and never again, only one sword at a time and leave a couple of months in between to get well aquainted, I did it with a couple of sabres and while both awesome I never "bonded" with either and its a promise I made from that day forth to myself (and wife) to not do again. It could be like dating two women, it will be fun but your not gonna build a loving relationship with two at once (he he some of us might though). And it is a relationship (hence swords were named a great deal). Your going for good blades so your gonna have a good performer either way. If you get two get a single and double hander and one from VA and one from Hanwei. Its not about which is better, its about establishing a preference.

Well the sword came in and....................................... It's rather nice. It's actually better then I expected. I expected it to be on the whippy side as most windlass over 30" tend to be but no, it's not at all. In fact it's almost as stiff as the Albion Gaddhigalt. The furniture is secure and the peen is nicely done. This has so far been well worth the money. This weekend I'll be taking the finish down to satin on the blade and start the hilt aging process. After that's done it's just a simple two riser grip wrap and bingo, new sword. And because this is an addiction I also picked up a type XII from Volund forge, got on the pre order list for a Malatesta, and am talking to Michael Pikula about a custom sword order. And then there's the hart sword from ollin. I need HELP!!!!!

I had one a few years back. I found it blade heavy and unresponsive. M. Type X, by nature, is going to have more blade presence as it would've had little in the way of distal taper, say, like a Type XII would have, which would move the PoB closer to the hilt. Albion's Type Xs for instance (i.e. Templar, Gaddjhalt) have PoB's at 6" or more...the Gaddjhalt's PoB is something like 8.75" out from the cross...that would definitely feel more blade heavy. I'm thinking they may have improved the model over time...or not. This is true, but it simply felt -dead-, as if the whole thing didn't work as one for anybody. The massive guard helped a bit, bringing the weight further back, but I think it made it overweight in general. Maybe one day I'll get one of my own and borrow someone's tools to mod the guard down. M.

I like it. It DOES NOT recover well in the cut, but boy does it cut. My St Maurice didn't recover so well either. In fact I'd say this sword may even handle a little better overall.

I'm not surprised about the St. Maurice...that's a type X too, right? I think these swords would show their true worth from horseback.
Too bad I don't know anyone willing to let me borrow a horse for a demo.

I wonder if my father's boss/my old boss would allow me to ride one of his horses with a sharp object in my hand. He probably wouldn't.

So I used a brown scotch bright pad and some 3-n-1 and got the finish to a decent place. Then came the aging of the hilt. Using a solution of two parts vinegar to one part water and a liberal amount pf salt I sprayed the cross and pommel. MAN does vinegar ever rust metal!!!! I had outstanding results within one hour! I took off the active rust and this weekend I'll continue the process but use a blow dryer to add heat to it. Then I'll be applying some perma blue to darken everything up. Pics to follow this weekend.

Sounds like a fun project. When you say you used a scotch pad, what do you mean?

Yep, that's exactly what I mean. The color denotes it's use. Brown and gray are for metal.

Yep; you're essentially scuffing off the old finish and bringing it down to a less mirror polish level. If I'm not mistaken, it's some kind of enamel they have on it...
