Personally I dont have antivirus, and i use Windows Been this way for over 2 years. Never had a serious virus in that period. A good firewall and common sense (like, not click on a link from a friend saying "HEY CHECK OUT THIS PICTURE") However: At work i use Norton antivirus and it truly works. Sometimes it feels as if it works just a little too good, due to frequent virus scannings and to many "warnings" for my taste (even warnings when there's nothing suspicious about a site ) Long post made short: Common sense + Norton = win from my point of view

At this house we haven't been a big fan of McAfee or Norton, they seem to be resource pigs. AVG has been dependable. But here's the rub, if you decide to run a different antivirus, you have to get the other one uninstalled. I agree with you here, and I've had some problems with convincing McAfee that yes, I did uninstall you, so go away. The Ubuntu dual-boot is also always handy. I've also developed the habit of installing Windows on its own partition, so if anything goes horribly wrong I can reformat and reinstall and only that partition gets wiped.

it have be sent alone,, i didn't send it, I do not understand what you mean, did it send itself? Are you new to the internet? These trojan viruses, most common in programs like Live Messenger are sent out automatically to contact lists on infected computers, unbeknownst to the computer owner. the unaware recipient opens the attached 'picture' or 'video' their friends computer sent and is then infected as well, and as the virus infects this new computer it starts sending the same messages to the new computers contact lists, and so forth, like a snowball building in size. Typical and common trojan virus spreading . Welcome to the world of social networking. ;D

Okay, here's the drill. Everyone go out and buy a decent external hard drive and always back up your data, period. You wouldn't treat your swords the way most treat their computers, well most of you wouldn't. Every year I end up rebuilding at least two friends computers, but because they ask me for help, they all have external drives and they keep them isolated from the computer except when doing back ups. I have seen family photos and other personal data survive numerous infections. The best antivirus on windows is common sense 2009, DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS! Now that being said, my main OS isn't windows so I'm a cocky SOB, but I do use Windows 7 RC on a dual boot. That's not as hard as it sound and for non Mac owners there are several LINUX flavors that are very easy to have set as part of a dual boot system, Ubuntu being one option. Get to know your nerd, everyone knows one, they often will work for beer and pizza. Facebook and Twitter are, well, getting their butts kicked constantly. Free horse, mouth thing. /rant off That's a good tip for PC users!!! My solution is, if you're going to go spend money on a external hard drive, spend the extra cash and buy a Mac!!!! No virus'!!!! Ok, there might be a couple floating around, but the chances of getting one is 1 in 5000000.

Damn shame you need to have a dual-boot setup just to combat this sort of attack.

Welcome to technology, the bad always outpaces the good. Defensive measures are only developed after an attack, etc. Lot of good it does, but there it is. I'm up for a new machine, and I'll be sticking with Apple not because I believe they're super-anti-virus machines of win and awesome...but because I prefer the streamlining of a good iMac and the interface presented by OS X. I also have two external hard drives and EVERYTHING goes onto them. I had dual boot with Windows (XP) once...I'd love to say "then I got a virus" but no, a friend decided the partition needed more space to install his game and buggered the whole thing; haven't bothered to restore it since.

I have Avast as well... tho I must confess I got it because it made me feel like a pirate. I don't have virus troubles anymore... but thats because I keep my cyber-activities to a minimum. I think the more Facebooking, Tweeting, Net Surfing and whatnot you do, the more open to attack you are. I use my computer for my e-mail, some online shopping and bills, and a few message sites like this one. I NEVER open attachments... unless they come to my e-mail and I know where they come from and am expecting them. Without exception. It dose not matter if it looks like it comes from a friend, unless I was expecting that friend to send me something, I don't open it. If it looks interesting, I'll leave it be and contact that freind and ask them 'Hey, did send me this? What is it?' and THEN I'll open it if I get confamation. You might call that paranoid, I just call it carefull.
