Here is something I have been wondering for a while.
Are there different quality tassels? Are they all pretty much the same or are there like high quality tassles that collectors put on their sword and crap ones for everyone else? Dose it matter where I buy one online?
Also where can I get a red horse hair tassle for a spear? I want an actual dyed horse hair tassel. Any ideas?

No Idea where you could get dyed horse hair, but I could talk to the wife about making you something out of silk. PM and I can give you the contact information.

I have a yellow tassel which in my opinion fits well with your jian. It was intended for my adam hsu jian but the adam hsu jian disappoints me so I return the jian. I still have it and if you want it I can mail it to you free of charge....just PM me with your street address. Don't worry I am not a stalker Btw I bought it from ebay for less than $10 including shipping (vendor from Hong Kong). Paul Chen has some red tassel but they are overpriced IMO. Edit: It's a decent tassel for the price. Its not made of horse hair or silk... Edit: It looks similar to this except the beads are transparent: www.enlightenmentswords.com/pictures/accessory_sword_tassel_3.jpg

You get horsehair from people who have horses and agree to give it to you. Or you can get it from people like these guys... mmhorsehair.com/In the meantime, I went with a totally different kind of tassel. That's Tanuki

Thanks!
Sichea- Thanks for the offer but I would hold on to it for your next Jian.
Tanuki- It was my understanding that Chinese spears used red dyed horse hair for the tassels so I was hoping that somewhere out there was a someone selling old school authentic ones.
LP- I jut might take you up on that.
Thanks everyone!

Tassels from Zheng-Wu and Qing-Zhong are nice. So are the Zhisword ones, they seem to have a piece of imitation jade on them. Atleast I would assume it's imitation. I bought some tassels from WingLam Enterprise before, and they are okay.

My wife was looking at silk options last night, and any manner of beads and or bone pendants could be attached.

Really high quality tassels, you might find with Peter Dekker, the Huanuo representative in Europe. www.mandarinmansion.com/"Chinese spears used red dyed horse hair for the tassels" Those would be situated below the spear head, and modern versions in low quality are available here in Taiwan in any Gongfu supply store. Pm me if not found in your place.
