$12.99 Kama set from Budk... Yes I said BudK By: Brian Stine This Picture is from budk's site, I don't know why it has a blueish tint to it, the Kama's are not blue, but a natural wood color! I didn't like the way they looked so I painted them and wrapped the bottom 6 inches with leather to give them a better look and for a better grip on the handle area. The blades are VERY VERY sharp! So having the leather on there lets me know that as long as my hands are on the leather, I'm not going to cut off my fingers! The New Look! Like I said, They are very sharp. Conclusion: They are $12.99.. I'd say thats a good buy. I spend more than that going out to eat. If your interested you can get them here. budk.com/product.asp?pn=31%20BKD317

I used to have a set of those that I picked up at a flea market a LONG time ago (back when I was 18). I too painted them and wrapped them in leather however I did mine in leather cord. I played with them for a bit and decided I didn't like Kama (after having a near miss with another pair of kama and my own thigh) so I gave them away to a friend.
Brian's right, those things came razor freaking sharp. However the trade off is that the blades are also VERY thin. I also found the steel in the blades to be a bit on the soft side. I'd say heat treating is suspect there but in a blade that thin I'd rather have a softer blade than a harder more brittle blade.
They're nice buys at $13. Just don't expect fantastic quality for that price. Seriously though if you're going to study the Budo arts I'd recommend spending the money to get the Hanwei or Bugei. Btw unless I'm wrong the kama from Bugei and Hanwei's kama are the same weapons.

I wonder if the label says" for rice harvesting only" and these are authentic agricultural implements. That would explain the thin, relatively soft blade and the stupid sharp edge. Mass production as farm tools gives the low price too.
just an idea,K

Kult of Athena and Swords of Might used to sell some Masahiro kama that were very similar to the Hanwei ones, only like $20 a piece. I don't know if they still carry them, though.

I'd thought that they might have been strictly agricultural implements. Of course what were the original kama but agricultural implements anyway. In any case yes these kama are very inexpensive and scary "don't get your finger near the edge" sharp. If you're looking for some inexpensive kama to cut things with these will do. On the other hand if you are looking to learn how to use kama I'd recommend the plethora of blunt training/tournament kama out there first before going with sharp ones.
