Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with Kris cutlery Chinese swords, specifically Kris Cutlery Jian III and Kris Cutlery Dao IV?
I know KC swords don't look pretty but I am more interested in the handling, sword balance, weight, finish on the blade and whether the sword is solidly constructed.
(I know Scott Rondell did a review on KC jian but that one was a discontinued model and I was wondering if they are offering a better product)
Any infomation is appreciated. Thanks ;D

Hey sicheah, My Cold Steel sword feel through, so did you get a Kris cutlery Dao IV? I'm also wanting one. Really would like to read a review. It seems I can't find anything on it here at SBG.

I did not get one. I was just curious as to the handling on KC Dao IV. After I observe a few basic stats of KC Dao IV from KoA. I think it should handle rather well.

forum.kungfumagazine.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-12027.htmlI handled it a plenty though gave it away some years ago. Guys, it's as functional as can be - great blade, tight fits - you will fall in love - just don't expect bling blings...The Dao IV is better than most up to the $500 range. There I said it. If you want good looks too, save and get the FS.

I had a Gim sword from Kris Cutlery that was just like the one they have in their scratch and dent section right now... Gim #4007. It handled very well, was VERY solidly built and cut quite well.

Any more follow-up on this? I am very interested in the KC Dao-Qing www.kultofathena.com/product~item~KRSDAOQ~name~Kris+Cutlery+Dao%2DQing.htmin particular because it is on sale for less than $85!!!. The KC site states that is blade is a bit heavy at 2lbs 6.6oz and isn't for beginners. I have been working with blades a good bit heavier than that, however, so I was thinking that if it well designed, it shouldn't bother me too much. Anybody played with one? Is it just a carbon steel blade, or is it actually tempered... any clue? I would really prefer the option of sharpening it up and cutting with it, if possible. The would drop the weight some too, of course. An alternative might be the training dao - www.kultofathena.com/product~item~KRSDA29~name~Kris+Cutlery+Training+Dao.htmhowever, I am less enamored with this as it has a stainless blade, so I wouldn't be doing any cutting with this one. Plus it is more expensive. I am new to Chinese swords, but like the look of these Dao. Is there such a thing as a sub-$100 functional cutter? Or are they purely for practicing forms? Buff

Thanks Sicheah. Pretty much what I was afraid of... sadly, $275 is a little steep for me right now. Still... at $85, I might grab the Qing just to fiddle with. The Hanwei isn't bad, but I don't like the shape of the blade on that one as much... a little too bulbous out near the tip (tho not as much as some I have seen).

The KC stuff has been lacking from some of the reviews that i read. and scott rodell reviewed the gim x on his site and found it improperly balanced for cutting. he also had a time with it for forms practice due to the balance.
havent seen any thing on the dao.
as for their dadao... the hand guard looks small for the type sword, and with the reviews that i have found of their work, i would be concerned.
though i can see a couple of happy customers above. the Hanwei dadao kinda had a bad rap somewhat, and a reviewer was concerned regarding cutting with it, but i found it a very good cutter and quite sturdy. the problem would be an untrained person using it with the thin blade to try the destructive testing could run into problems. all in all a good sword. so you never know about the KC. they might have some different stuff now. the SBG site has helped alot from my understanding to bring better products to market since the venders and manufactirers can see what folks think.

For the KC price range you can get a sword from Garrett Chan that has better fittings, better blade and balance.
KC steel is soft, My KC gim took on a slight saber like curve after a few cuts. Garrett's blades are around 50-55 for mono, and his differentially hardened ones are about 55-60 on hardened edge. They also handle much more like an antique than the KC which has a POB too close to handle.

Just a heads-up, I posted in another thread but the Gim II is on sale for $125. That's pretty darned cheap.
